Not too keen on this one (although I wouldn't say NO if I won it!).

I wouldn't want the yoga studio or vegetable patch and the study nook looks a bit small. Maybe I could convert the yoga studio to an office? I'm not sure I'm liking the living room either, which appears to be just a hole in the ground with a sofa in it😂

ShyMaryEllen · 14/08/2025 14:21

Yes, I realised that after I posted. I can imagine people forever tripping on those stairs carrying things down to the sitting room. I never want the spa things either, but maybe an outdoor sauna would be ok. I'd convert the yoga thing to an office/library and the cinema room to a sitting room, and maybe level up the sunken bit to make it level with the kitchen and have the whole thing as a family room with seating and dining areas off the kitchen.

I can never remember how to find the bit where they tell you the running costs, but I'm guessing a gardener is a must. There's half a million in cash, too, so that would pay for a few years of gardening, I suppose. I couldn't be arsed with a swimming pool either, specially an outdoor one which could only be used a few times a year and would need constant maintenance.

It's too far from my home to have it as an occasional holiday place, but I think the current design is more suited to that than to a permanent home. It would probably rent out easily enough, so maybe I'd keep it for a year or two, visit now and then and rent it out for holidays the rest of the time, then sell it.

I think this is on the “to sell” pile not “keep”. I agree it seems more like a home to live in than a holiday house (if we win the Cornwall one, it would be a keep as a holiday house/rental until retirement).

are they giving more money in this draw? Seems a lot for your moving in costs.

Roundaboot · 14/08/2025 14:36

The outside is lovely and love the idea of having a pool, sauna and vegetable patch but the inside seems too small to support all that outdoor entertaining space. And I hate the sunken "living room" bit. I agree that I'd convert the cinema room into a proper living room

mateysmum · 14/08/2025 14:46

I quite like the location and the size, but there is a lot of wasted space downstairs. I would want to knock through the little work station and make the useless cinema room into a proper sitting room with access from the entrance hall, otherwise the only reception space is open to the kitchen and the entrance hall is wasted. Pre Omaze, it was a family area, but still open to the kitchen. The Omaze visuals are really rubbish - too many close ups and they don't show the cinema room or the mezzanine I don't think.

ShyMaryEllen · 14/08/2025 18:41

The entrance hall seems disproportionately large compared to the lounge area. I suspect that if all the bedrooms were filled it might be quite cramped, despite all the outside space.

The child's bedroom is cute, but I'm not sure it's really a family house. Does anyone know how close it is to civilisation?

Has anyone figured out where it is/found old sales particulars yet? I love seeing how the houses used to look!

disappointedconfused · 14/08/2025 20:16

It’s a bit of an odd layout - massive entrance hallway footprint of which is bigger than the lounge and the another hallway where the space for the “office” is - most of the downstairs is hallway 😂

Yeah I am totally perplexed by the layout downstairs, it's such a wasteful use of space

Ellmau · 14/08/2025 20:25

Ugly outside, and is the raised veg garden because it doesn't have much space in the actual garden?

Pool lovely but would be expensive to maintain.

Yoga and cinema rooms are a bit niche.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 14/08/2025 20:29

First impression, "F* me, that's a lot of glass to clean dog snot and toddler handprints off!"

On just looking at the photos, I wouldn't make much use of the sauna, the cinema room or the yoga studio. I wouldn't mind a vegetable patch or a pool (although I imagine that they cost a fortune to run, and outdoor ones probably aren't practical with the UK climate).

It’s Birch Springs on South Baddesley Road. I would prefer it to be on the other side of Lymington river personally. It looks like it was a different/old property that was knocked down and redeveloped. I don’t know its history … yet!
Wink

Daftapath · 14/08/2025 23:10

Ha! Cross post!

Starseeking · 14/08/2025 23:15

I don’t like that house at all, I much prefer old houses (my current is a 1920’s semi which I love), and drool over Edwardian as that’s my favourite period home style.

However, I’m off on holiday to the New Forest soon, so taking stumbling across this thread as a sign I should buy a ticket this time (I probably buy one every few months), and will happily sell the place for half the value the day after winning!

Aspanielstolemysanity · 14/08/2025 23:15

Interesting! Thank you! Yes I would have preferred it to be the other side of Lymington too

I think I’d sell and buy in Brock!

Ellmau · 14/08/2025 23:20

From the planning report posted above: "Usually new design, whether traditional or contemporary should
be sympathetic and in keeping with its surroundings, but in this
case, as the site is located within heavily wooded grounds and
alterations were made to the remodelling to allow the dwelling to
relate to its setting and blend in with it, the effect on the
Conservation Area (a designated heritage asset) is considered to
be neutral, given the extent of woodland surrounding the dwelling
on all sides."

IE planners think design is not sympathetic or in keeping. I agree :)

Aspanielstolemysanity · 14/08/2025 23:20

Looks like this is it? Handy for strawberry supplies I guess!!

Yes, that’s it. Next to the pick your own strawberries and opposite Elmers

Does Brockenhurst flood a lot? My family live just outside and don't have an issue as far as I am aware, but I don't tend to go into Brockenhurst itself I guess

ShyMaryEllen · 15/08/2025 13:47

What is on the mezzanine? Could that space be utilised somehow?

I grew up down there and still have family around there too. Parts of the forest and roads around there can flood after a lot of rain. Thankfully the flooding has never affected a family’s property but one has been ‘flooded in’ ie had no exit route out of their road.
