Charity Shop or Sell?

Just had yet another clear out of my daughter's room and a car load of stuff has gone to the charity shop. This usually happens 3 times a year.

Friends have questioned why I don't sell things but to be honest, most things are bought second hand or passed from friends/family. Others also do the same as me. I also love the idea of somebody seeing what I've donated in the charity shop and feeling like they've found a bargain 😃

What do you do with your unwanted things? 😊

Majority of stuff goes to the charity shop, or in the bin if it's too worn out. I have sold stuff in the past like brand name trainers that were barely worn before DD had a growth spurt and they no longer fitted but now she's a teenager and stuff fits her for longer it's often only fit for the bin.

I simply couldn't be bothered trying to sell things. When I donate easy to sell things to charity, well that's the charity's good fortune.

I always donate to the charity shop. So much easier to just take stuff there, rather than take pictures, upload, wait for someone to bid / buy, wait for someone to pay and then wait for them to be collected or having to go to the post office to post the stuff.

I only sell things that are branded/expensive like barely worn Irregular Choice shoes. I charity shop the rest as I don't think it's worth 99p to spend time selling/posting an old Primark top or similar and certainly not really worth it to a buyer when you factor in P+P.

Charity shop.
Currently helping mil to declutter her kitchen- 5 Bodum coffee pots and 3 Denby teapots being dropped to shop tomorrow morning. Those are from one shelf - about 25 more shelves to go.

I donate, a close family member works in a hospital cancer research department and many cancer research projects are financed by charities and are incredible The research projects will in the long term be of benefit to so many people. Obviously if you are in financial difficulties I can understand selling as I did myself years ago.

Sell on ebay, vinted or at carboot

about £10k so far this year with £2500 from 5 car boots alone

just cleared out another lot and so should add £5-600 at the weekend and have a couple of hundred pounds of stuff to list on Vinted later

Whaleandsnail6 · 13/08/2025 18:39

Donate

Not because I'm particularly charitable but because once I've had a clear out, I want stuff gone asap rather than still there waiting to he sold.

I don't tend to have particularly expensive things that would have good resale value for me either so doesn't feel worth the hassle

I donate - the time saved and the space gained is more important to me than the money. I think charity shops currently get a lot of Shein/Primark donations because anything better goes on Vinted, so it’s even more important to donate things that are actually sellable.

Dabberlocks · 13/08/2025 18:50

Most of it go to a charity shop. Years ago I used to do car boot sales, but I can't be arsed to get up that early on a Sunday morning any more!

We are actually just about to send a large box of random items to our local auction - it's the last of a deceased relative's belongings, and are more on the antique / collectable end of things.

DogsAndBirds · 13/08/2025 19:48

Donate most of it - the occasional thing that is worth a fair bit more, we will sell; usually fb market place or eBay.

Tbh we don’t tend to have that much to “get rid of”, as generally wear our clothes and store any grown out kids clothes for a potential second.

If we don’t have a second child we will probably sell at a NCT sale or similar

jetlag92 · 13/08/2025 20:09

It varies - really decent stuff I sell on vinted (over £2,000 so far over three years)
Toys and middling stuff - we do a car boot every year and make about £150
Other stuff usually goes to the charity shops, but we do sell lego via the "webuylego" app
