Talk to me about resin drives

I know it's not the most exciting of topics but please talk to me about resin drives. Good? Bad? Waste of money?

We particularly need a drive that lets the water soak through due to many drainage reasons that I won't bore you with

I dont think resin will let water soak through. Isn't it basically stones embedded in plastic?

rubyslippers · 13/08/2025 16:53

They are permeable
they can crack
i prefer the look of brick but it’s all very personal

Flamingmentalcats · 13/08/2025 16:59

Neighbours have a resin drive about 10 years old now if not a bit more. It's worn really well and it's South facing too

EducatingArti · 13/08/2025 17:00

It will add to micro plastics in the environment as it deteriorates

ClaredeBear · 13/08/2025 17:02

We’ve just had resin and we have it a lot of thought as I was concerned about the aesthetic and environmental impact. They are indeed permeable and to soften the look we went for a grey nearest to the colour tarmac goes once it’s lost its deep black colour, with a border of reclaimed bricks.

Permeable
Expensive
Can be slippery

I was worried about this - there’s so little out there in terms of comparing different materials - I can see that being an issue.

Littletreefrog · 13/08/2025 17:06

The environmental aspect does worry me but we need parking and I need my house not to flood every time it rains heavily. Nothing can be done regards drains so porous surface it is. Another option is gravel but I think it would just end up everywhere!

We have a traditional block driveway, and the neighbors have a resin driveway. I'm definitely not jealous. We didn't go for resin at the time due to cost and budget. If we had our time again, I probably would pay extra and chose resin. Their driveway does drain a bit better than ours, and it's aging really nicely. We also get weeds coming up through the blocks, but there's has remained weed free. It was fascinating watching the process, they use a material made of recycled tyres which helps with the drainage. I'm surprised and impressed with the drainage. The only thing I'm not sure of is what happens if you get an oil leak from a car. With the blocks, you can just pick out the ones that get damaged and replace.

Slippery

HelplessSoul · 13/08/2025 17:42

Concrete driveway is the answer.

Summergarden · 13/08/2025 17:43

We like ours in that rainwater just soaks straight into it and it’s definitely never been slippery.

Dont make our mistake though- choose a dark colour and not a light grey that shows up every mark and stain and doesn’t come off with anything!

CitizenZ · 13/08/2025 18:00

We've got it. I don't know where people are getting 'slippery' from, it's not slippery at all. I love ours.

AndSoFinally · 13/08/2025 18:04

Concrete driveway is the answer.

Not if it needs to be permeable
