Pig name suggestions please. I'm running out of ideas. Long OP. If you aren't up for a big read, this isn't for you.

I need girl names.

I've got 4 sows and a boar at the moment.

First of all, there is HRH Hamilla Porker-Bowles, her daughters Hogzilla,
Pjörk, Porkahontas, Amy Swinehouse, Patsy Swine, and her sons Voldesnort, Piggy Smalls and The Notorious P.I.G.

Hamilla is SO ready for a break! She's a grumpy bugger at the best of times but she's absolutely had enough right now! Her babies are two months old now and giving her absolute hell. We are about to start giving her some time off by putting them in the big nursery pen every day.

Second to deliver was the Baroness Von Schwienbacon. She had 5 girls - Denise Van Snouten, Sarah Jessica Porker, Emiline Pankwurst, Hamelia Earhart and Spam Aires and 5 boys - Ham Solo, Pigcasso, Luke Stywalker, Salvador Deli and Steven Squealburg.

The Baroness is an absolute sweetheart. She's so loving and gentle but stubborn too. When we bought her, she refused point blank to load so she stayed behind and they went back the next day to plead with her to please load :D She loves belly rubs and heaven help you if you walk past without dispensing some.

Next to deliver is going to be Lady Saddleback of Melton Mowbury, she's due in a few weeks. She used to share a pen with the Baroness but they had to be separated just before B gave birth. They can still see each other but she's not happy.

Then in October The Countess of Gruntington will be having hers. She's new and still getting used to the place.

We also have a boar called Piggalo, The Duke Of Slurry. He's so funny. He buries himself all the time and whenever he hears someone, he jumps out and yells his head off until they stop what they are doing and give him fuss and scratches.

With the exception of Hamilla, who's a bitey bugger, the rest are so sweet natured and very protective of the little ones. We damn near had a mutiny when it came time to clip the piglets teeth. They started yelling their heads off and all the big ones (except Hamilla who didn't give a shit) started trying to scramble out of their pens to come kick the crap out of the person doing the clipping.

The vet prescribed large amounts of ear scritches until all was forgiven :D

I have an abundance of male names ready (thank you google!) but am struggling for girls names.

I've got Penelope Pigstop, Spamala Anderson and Hamantha Jones

The ‘comedy’ meat names make me feel sick. Will you slaughter them yourself OP or pay someone to kill them?

They will be slaughtered at the farm, which is much better than having them transported for slaughter. They get very stressed being transported, its far better to do it in house.

I can stun them but I do not have the skills to slaughter them and I would not risk doing a poor job which could cause unnecessary suffering. My husband and the farm workers have those skills.

They need to be rendered unconscious immediately and then quickly and cleanly slaughtered. If I am not confident that I could do that then I have no right to try and potentially inflict a worse death on them than they would otherwise have.

I will not apologise for getting close to them or giving them fun names. I will not apologise for making sure they have toys and treats and scratches either for that matter. How they live matters, regardless what their ultimate fate is. Even though they will end up as food they are entitled to the best life. Maybe more entitled because of how it will end.

They will have great lives and then they will be slaughtered. Quickly. Humanely. In their own home. The males will be slaughtered at anything up to a year old and the females will be bred and either kept or sold as gilts. Those that are kept will have one or 2 litters a year for approx 3 years and then they too will be slaughtered.

If you are looking to berate me about this, my advice is dont waste your time. I am happy with the level of care and love we give our pigs, I have made my peace with the fact that they are being bred for food and am happy with the humane way they will eventually be slaughtered.

Love Eleanor Pigby. Great song.

I had a couple of OSBs called Fred and Ginger. Lovely breed and good meat too.

MyrtleLion · 13/08/2025 18:38

Pigola Sturgeon.

Research says that animals reared well and not stressed make better tasting meat.

Temple Grandin invented a humane smooth curved path to slaughter. The animals went in quietly and unstressed and the meat tasted better as a result.

Pigs are very intelligent creatures and deserve lots of scratches and searching for food fun.

Keep it up! Loving your pigs 😍

ErrolTheDragon · 13/08/2025 18:50

Pigs are definitely highly intelligent so let’s have Nobel prizewinner Dorothy Hog-kin.

PigginFantastic · 13/08/2025 19:35

Oh they are.

A bored pig is a destructive pig as the saying goes.

Either give them lots to do or they'll find their own entertainment and you won't bloody like it 🤣

Funny. Me and the dc were talking about having pet pigs today (we drove past a pig farm). They are brilliant clever, funny animals. Your incredibly lucky to have the space and ability to have them.

the names are all excellent! A particular favourite was the Holly swilloughby

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/08/2025 19:48

I'd probably steer clear of names that are puns on names of people who are/were from cultures or faiths that were unlikely to eat pork, though. That doesn't feel right to me.

As a vegetarian I applaud you. It’s very important they have a good life.
My DF reared pigs when I was little and it’s one of reasons I am a vegetarian. Because looking after them made them pets in my brain. They are so super cute 🐷🐷🐖
