Where to sell a second hand prom dress.

Hi,

My daughter's Y11 Prom was in June. Her dress cost £650 new, and had £70 of alterations.

Does anyone have any idea of the best place to sell it on? I don't expect to get close to the full price I paid, but a few hundred quid would be nice.

Ebay? Facebook? Or does anybody know of any dedicated sites? Dress is by Ellie Wilde.

TIA.

Vinted.

My dd is just going into y11 and coincidentally, I was having a browse of prom dresses on there last night to see if we could get away with second hand or would need to buy new. There's loads on there.

You aren't likely to get a few hundred back. There's barely any market for secondhand special occasion wear. The cost of the alterations is meaningless in terms of resale value- and it actually devalues the dress more, because if it's been shortened or taken in, you need to find a buyer who is the same size or smaller than your daughter.

Vinted, depop or Facebook marketplace are your best bets but you may need to revise your expectations.

I would have thought that now is not a good time to sell. Surely the best time would be in the run up to next year's prom season. Can you hold on to it until then?

Yes, I probably didn't explain well. I don't intend to sell it until the run up to Prom next year. I am just trying to work out where is best to advertise it, as I like to be organised.

Similar with my DD but her dress only cost £350 and she only wore the bloody thing for 3 hours, 1 of which was posing for photos at home, 1 for posing for photos at school then after half an hour she and her friends decided it was boring and went home for pizza and change into comfy clothes! Biggest waste of money ever and I wish I'd stuck to my original guns and got her something for £50.

I do understand about the tailoring, I was just adding as much info as I could. Thanks.

I’d say Vinted but my DD scored a stunning formal dress of lace over silk over tulle in perfect condition for…£15. So I don’t think you’ll get £00s. Her own prom dress (which we managed to lose in a move) only cost £100 new.
A consignment shop?

inappropriateraspberry · 13/08/2025 11:58

Vinted or locally in Facebook. But I doubt you’d get much for it. If people are prepared to pay hundreds, then they’ll likely buy new rather than second hand (unless it is a very specific, sought after design).

Just keep it for next time she has an event or a wedding etc to wear it to? You will get pennies back for it as the marketplace is overrun by prom dresses all year round and no one will pay hundreds for it

that was my logic for getting my DD an expensive dress but she gained so much muscle once she went to college on an elite sports course aged 16 that the bloody thing didn't fit her shoulders!

If it's anything like this, it will only be wearable at another ball: https://fairytaleendings.co.uk/product/ellie-wilde-ew35084-bluebell/ I'm guessing that at £650 it is quite large and elaborate.

Google for a dress agency in your nearest town. Ours does a roaring trade in prom dresses and the seller gets 50% of the selling price. I’d say that youngsters want to try on a few before buying.

Vinted
But wait until April / May next year....
