Do you turn off washing machine / dishwasher at plug each night ?

Does doing this save a lot?

i managed to get my electric bill down significantly about a year ago by never really having the lights on , turning off the tv at the plug at night etc. but it’s gone back up massively again. Can’t work out why. Had an absolute battle to get a display monitor to see usage (apparently it’s on its way) . Cant get the meter checked (they refused).

Looking at what else I can actually do - will turning off appliances such as washing machine and dishwasher at the plug help? Any other ideas ?

I switch everything off at the wall when not in use and I haven’t noticed my bills being any lower. They continue to rise as they keep increasing the standard charges and price per kw.

Shouldn’t make any difference keeping them plugged in but not on, unless you have an integrated dishwasher where the light is on inside. Do you have a smart meter, my main use is tv and oven.

Turning off appliances at the wall makes little difference, modern appliances like TVs are designed to be in Standby mode and use very little power, washers/dryers use nothing when not in use. Do you have anything new? Changed your boiler settings? We had a power cut a few months ago and when our power came back on we noticed our boiler was switched back to default rather than eco mode

No nothing has changed , we have a smart meter just need the display unit (why is it such a battle to get one !) the usage section on the app never works so hopefully this will help us

Leaky fridge or freezer seal?

Turning off an appliance at the wall won't make much difference, I don't think washing machines are on standby like old tellies were.

The things that use a lot on standby are Sky boxes, especially the older Sky+ ones. Washing machines and dishwashers won't

I can’t turn mine off at the wall, the switch is at the back, I can I ,y turn the actual machine off.
I do turn Sky off every night, even though DH hates me doing it!

If your consumption has gone up without you doing anything different it is usually a faulty appliance or device. There are a couple of ways to find out which one it might be and the easiest one is to buy a smart plug with energy monitoring. We use a Tapo one and that can also be used as a timer too using the app.

This means you don't have to physically stand there monitoring your smart meter when something is running or overnight. The app will tell you how much something is using. There are lots of information sites online telling you what your fridge should use etc.

There are plugs that display what has been used but an app is better as you can see when it is pulling power not just how much power it pulled.

Sometimes as mentioned it is as simple as your fridge door seal not sealing as well and so it is using more power to keep it cool. Turning things off at the plug doesn't really do much. I used to work for an energy company.

We don’t have sky so it can’t be that ! It’s just frustrating me !
