Nespresso Machine - worth it??

Leedssdeel · 13/08/2025 07:18

Just that , really! I am on a tight budget so this is a treat , I absolutely cannot go for the cafe style machines, as much as I would love to , so I am thinking of a Nespresso . I had a dolce gusto and a tassimo before , years back , and I was really disappointed with both , but I have heard good things about Nespresso .

Most importantly - which one ? I have heard you can only use Vertuo pods in the Vertuo and you have to order them online ?? That’s no good for me, I drink a LOT of coffee so I need to be able to pop to Tesco for my pods.

Looking online , they do so many in Tesco ( Lor ones , oh wow ❤️ ) but the description just says ’ nespresso machines ‘ - how do I know which one ?

I hated our Nespresso machine. The coffee is amazing. You can buy it from John Lewis, in store. The machine itself? Class action lawsuits in the US because they are so unreliable. Once you put a pod in, if the machine decides to not brew it, you've wasted the pod. They are not cheap!!!!

Have you considered a grinder/bean to cup?

We also have a Tassimo but microplastics concern me, even though the machine has been great, despite but not a lot of variety in the coffee.

We drink minimum 8-10 cups a day, each. We also have a percolator, instant and a cafetiere!

Hello fellow addict!

WhiteAmericanoNoSugar · 13/08/2025 07:25

how do you sleep at night Fluffy! I'd be buzzing! I find my nespresso machine annoying in that way too. Prefer a cafetière!

LeaAndDer · 13/08/2025 07:26

I’ve had Nespresso citiz and milk for over 20 years. I think they’re great. I buy the cafe Nero pods. I’ve also got a mini machine the Essenza in my holiday home. They’re under £100

I use my Nespresso Krups daily. If it broke I’d replace it. Much nicer coffee than cafetière.
And Tesco frequently have the Starbucks pods on offer for about £3.25 per box.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 13/08/2025 07:28

I’m thinking of getting one. I have a bean to cup machine but never use it, I can’t get it to make nice coffee….i know it’s me but it’s too much faff learning what to do. 🤷‍♀️

the nespresso im considering is the citiz one. It takes the original pods which are the ones you want, not the newer dome shaped ones. So a machine which takes the original pods means you can get pods from other manufacturers such as Grind and Starbucks.

I need to go to a nespresso boutique to actually try the coffee.

TillyTrifle · 13/08/2025 07:28

I love my nespresso but the downside is the cost of the pods. I drink two a day (Vertuo) so it’s about £1.20 a day for two excellent coffees. I take one out in my Nespresso travel cup rather than buy one, simply because coffee from Pret, Costa etc taste horrible in comparison! The nespresso travel cup is incredible by the way, keeps it piping hot for hours. If there are dupe pods available I will try them but I thought nespresso had locked the machines down with the bar code things on their own pods so that fakes wouldn’t work?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 13/08/2025 07:28

I've had two Nespresso Citiz machines and we now have a Lavazza a Modo Mio. If I was to get a machine to take Nespresso pods, I'd get the L'Or one. Currently £60 on Amazon. Or look for a secondhand machine on Facebook or in a charity shop.

Edited

That's good to hear. The issue, in particular, was with the Nespresso Vertuo machine. They are pushed all over as some great thing but they are not.

I will have a look at this citiz and milk thing! Can't have too many coffee machines in this house!

myplace · 13/08/2025 07:30

I use the L’Or Barrista. It’s been replaced once under warranty. I do two a day in it and have really enjoyed it.

The pod locker sometimes fails, but you can reset it by using an XL pod. You get two in the tester box that comes with it. I kept one after use- left it to dry- in case I need it again.

I think the pod locking failure may be cause by the cheap plastic pods. It hasn’t happened since I stuck to the aluminium pods.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 13/08/2025 07:30

I have had a Nespresso machine a very old model which the discontinued which was fine, replaced it with the L'or which is much cheaper and takes the common capsule shape. I order the capsules on subscription from the wonky coffee company which is fab and really easy and keeps me well stocked.

jumpingthehighjump · 13/08/2025 07:31

Don't get the Nespresso Vertuo ... Capsules are so much more expensive

Just get a bog standard capsule machine and order pods from wonky coffee, a fantastic initiative where they use pods that have been rejected from other suppliers. So much cheaper. I have used them for years.

I’ve got an original pod machine at home and very in the caravan. I’d go for an original for ease of buying - if they still do it the “pixie” is great - fairly small. If you want to just drink coffee it’s great, but if you want lattes etc then you’ll either need a more expensive machine or separate milk frother.

my home machine is the creatista - it’s been great so far but they do have a reputation for water leaks. I’ve had mine about 3 years with no issues yet.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 13/08/2025 07:32

Yeah, my experience has been that plastic pods for Nespresso machines are unreliable.

NebulouslyContemporaneous · 13/08/2025 07:34

Nespresso coffee is delicious. But the pods are sooo expensive, and their collection service for recycling the pods became much more crap a year or so ago.

That was what gave me the push to kick my Nespresso habit. It drove home to me how absurdly resource intensive it must be to have individual portions of coffee packaged in aluminium, which is collected by van (at some environmental cost) and processed (presumably at some environmental cost) into some degree of re-usability.

RelaxedOddish · 13/08/2025 07:36

Nespresso sometimes have deals on where you get a free coffee machine if you buy a number of pods. If you buy a machine they send you quite a lot of free coffee pods also. Not sure how many but possibly 5 sleeves plus.

I have my coffee on subscription where it comes monthly or every two months if I haven't used all the pods. But I will only have 1 cup a day and my husband maybe 2/3 a week, so we aren't big coffee drinkers.

I spend about £40 on them every couple of months and get about 8 sleeves. They send one free sleeve with that and some discounts.

I have seen that you can get refillable pods for th venturo pods on Amazon. Not tried them myself though.

Hardlyworking · 13/08/2025 07:40

I have the nespresso creatista pro. It's a bit pricier but has the steam wand built in, and is so quick, easy and simple to usewoth no faffing.

If you like frothy coffee I'd recommend the creatista over the basic models. It takes the standard common capsules.

I use Starbucks pods. They are actually made by nespresso and are as good as their own branded pods. Often on sale in the main supermarkets for about 2.75 a pack (27.5p a cup).

I also have an old citiz and milk frother which I have in my work bag. Does a perfectly adequate job but you don't get the smooth microfoam that the creatista produces.

What pods does this take ? Could I buy them from the supermarket? Is it only Lor or can you use other brands sold in supermarkets too? X

I have both an original line compatible machine (not actually Nespresso) and a vertuo. I decided on original line initially as I wanted to buy the compatible pods only to find I don't like the compatible pods and I am in fact a Nespresso snob! I did like the ones they sold in hotel Chocolat but they stopped them and I spent ages trying to find a decent alternative but ended up just buying Nespresso anyway.

If you're not like me though, and like the non brand ones then you can get original line Nespresso.machines fairly cheaply if you just want the basic..I've also sometimes seen compatible machines (and pods) in places like Lidl or Aldi.

HauntedHero · 13/08/2025 07:44

It's definitely worth looking into offers or subscriptions, I got my machine for a pound when taking out a subscription (original style pods not vertuo).

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 13/08/2025 07:44

I’m also into in what pods the l’or machine takes….i know it takes the original shape Nespresso ones. Will it take the same shape ones made by other companies like Grind and Starbucks?

pontivex · 13/08/2025 07:44

We have had the same machine for 10 years. Bought in Auckland, brought on a plane to London where it lived happily for two years, then on a plane back to Sydney. I was attached to it that much it came as personal baggage not in the shipping container. Still going strong. Never put a foot wrong. It doesn’t lien aftermarket capsules though, only Nespresso ones which is fine by me given they are alu and recyclable and not plastic.
10 years at 4 coffees a day between me and DH (more if we have guests) means it’s done nearly 15000 coffees

we have another for our guest house which was free when we signed up for a coffee subscription which is pretty good value for us as we get through the coffee no problem and it’s delivered to the door (and they take away the empties)

MermaidMummy06 · 13/08/2025 07:46

I've had a few nespresso machines. I switched to a bean to cup because the pods are too expensive. I can get beans on special, even from roasters, for much cheaper. Over two years the machine has paid for itself and then some.

supercalifragilistic123 · 13/08/2025 07:47

The machines that use the pods you can buy in the supermarket don't make a full size coffee, and you need two to make a decent tasting brew in my opinion.
The second generation machine pods are expensive but so easy to use, taste good and make a full size coffee without boiling the kettle. It's my treat to myself.

But if your actually drinking lots of coffee and want to use it every time your probably better off getting a proper coffee machine.

REDB99 · 13/08/2025 07:52

I agree the Vertu pods are expensive so avoid this machine. I also have the L’or machine and like it. It takes standard Nespresso style pods so you can use any brand including supermarket ones or Nero / Costa / Starbucks etc (as well as L’or / Nespresso pods).

Lafufufu · 13/08/2025 07:54

Honestly I had one at work and felt meh about it. The machine was unreliable and half the time the pods wouldn't pierce.
Also im not particularly "ohh the environment !" But even I thought it was really wasteful.

The guys I work with who have ££££ salaries at work (like 500k plus) all use
Chemex or similar things like this
https://www.bodum.com/gb/en/11571-109-pour-over?gadsource=1&gadcampaignid=20013034543&gbraid=0AAAAADFdOysVhEJhzVbQxk5Pbq4EfBZTX&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzOvEBhDVARIsADHfJJSWkhT10X1QEndgdFkr-aIuX002V7AcvdybHnib55sPqO6v7BgijH8aAhQvEALwwcB

They have a bean grinder and buy the beans themselves.

They are very much about "good coffee" and "best things" not just convenience.

If espresso will bring you joy because you like the look and convenience go for it!

You can also get pods from grind which are supposed to be good
