Child sick on holiday abroad

DD6 woke around 5am yesterday morning complaining of stomach ache.
She was sick quite a lot. Gave her some calpol and a sip of water and she brought that back up. She was sick about 5/6 times and finally stopped being sick around 11am. We stayed in the room all day and night resting with her complaining of tummy ache but no sickness.

Around 10pm last night she said she was feeling a lot better and wanted a biscuit and drink of milk, which I gave her. Now I know I shouldn’t have given her milk. She was sick again 20 mins after the milk and biscuit. She was crying saying her tummy was really hurting.
I thought it would just be a 24hour thing but she’s woke this morning and still doesn’t feel well. Her tummy is hurting still.
She said it’s worse when she moves around and just wants to lay down. She has no energy.

Any advice please. Should I get a doctor to see her or just keep her in again all day and night and hope she’s ok tomorrow?

Were in Turkey and fly home Saturday night. So have another 3 and half days here

Can you ring 111 from Turkey and get some advice?

Mousehi · 13/08/2025 06:29

Could it be heat stroke? Have you been getting fluids in?

Springadorable · 13/08/2025 06:29

Get some diarolyte or equivalent electrolyte replacement drinks and get her to sip that over a few hours. Normal for her to feel wiped out, but as the sickness did decrease and she was feeling a bit better until the milk and food I'd give it a bit longer and let her rest

My 2yr old son had a nasty 48 hour vomiting bug when we were in an all inclusive resort in May. We were midway through our holiday (and then both parents got it too).
Our travel company agent (Jet2) said we would need to get him checked, and ask for a fit to fly note. Think it cost about 80€, but could claim it back on insurance.

Why on earth?! Speak to reception.

Three times we’ve been to Turkey and all three times we’ve ended up poorly like this. It’s likely food poisoning - I guarantee if you google search the hotel you’re in, there will stories of people getting similar.

I would try and get some sports lucozade or equivalent electrolyte drink into her in sips and see how she goes for another day.

Does your hotel have a GP service or anything similar you can ask for advice?

chowmeinz · 13/08/2025 06:42

I wouldn’t be looking to take a 6 year old to the GP at home with a tummy upset at this stage so based on that I wouldn’t be looking for a doctor abroad either.

I think your just manage her symptoms as you would at home, it’s very soon to be thinking about getting her a medic

FanofLeaves · 13/08/2025 06:43

Calpol isn’t for sickness or tummy pain, so don’t give anymore of that. Yes you should ask if she can be checked because if for any reason you do need to claim anything on insurance (ie you end up getting a later flight as they’re still too unwell to travel) you will need to show that this has been done. When my friend’s little boy got bad sickness on holiday in Morocco a doctor came to the hotel and administered an anti emetic injection in his bottom, and he was able to fly home comfortably- they claimed back cost on insurance. You need to be speaking with reception and your rep asap if you have one. Plus would have thought you’d want all clean sheets and towels too, and some disinfectant for the room.

Why do you keep going back, three times and ending up with suspected food poisoning each time and I would probably try somewhere else for my holiday!

Rest… dioralyte… plain crackers or something.
its not ideal but keep hydrated and out of the sun.
it will pass

GoodOnPaper · 13/08/2025 06:50

Does she have a temperature?

Both my children had appendicitis aged 5 and 6. Unusual at this age but a possibility. Started with tummy pain and vomiting.

I’d get her seen at that age. Even with a tummy bug she could get dehydrated quite quickly.

TouchOfSilverShampoo · 13/08/2025 06:55

@FanofLeavesOh 100% would never return 😂 we even tried different regions, opposite ends of the bloody country thinking it would be different and it wasn’t.

Colleague of mine came home from Antalya last year with salmonella and was off work for seven weeks.

A Google search showed that a young boy actually died upon returning home from the same hotel we stayed in following complications from food poisoning, it completely destroyed his liver.

I don’t know how majority of the resorts are still open. Their hygiene practises are appalling and the package holding companies still market them.

You would be surprised at how many rock up at our Paeds ED after one or two episodes of vomiting in a couple of hours.

Op try something like apple juice watered down a or cordial with sugar, give a little ( like 5 mls ish) every 5 minutes for an hour. If she becomes hungry think basic like plain biscuit, toast, etc. Small amount. Defo no dairy.

dodidos · 13/08/2025 06:58

Thanks all. She doesn’t have a temperature today. She did feel a little warm yesterday but doesn’t today.
she’s been having sips of water.
Shes just feel back to sleep so going to let her rest and see how she is again when she wakes.
Ill get her dad to go to the pharmacy and ask them if there is anything we can give her for a bit of energy and strength back

God, that is awful!

At home I’d agree with you but abroad, I’d want things checked out for insurance purposes, incase of needing more medical treatment or not being well enough to fly. And especially if it ended up being food poisoning and you make a claim for missing a good chunk of your holiday due to a resort’s poor hygiene practices.

PrincessJasmine1 · 13/08/2025 08:21

She should be fine by Saturday. Probably got sick from ice-cream. Don't worry. Next time, take her to Spain instead.

Cherrysoup · 13/08/2025 12:56

Keep out of pools too, absolutely grim in some resorts.
