…do you actually enjoy it?

I’ve spoken to various friends about this and observed comments on social media with so many people complaining about the ‘crazy heat’ when holidaying in places like Greece, southern Spain, Italy, Turkey etc.. Even my sibling messaged me this week from the Canaries saying it was over 40c by their apartment and that they were having to stay inside, the kids felt sick etc..

For the past few years I have actively avoided travelling abroad during the summer, with the exception of Brittany as the heat is just bonkers and I don’t enjoy that level of intensity, the kids moan and we all come exhausted from such poor sleep quality.

Why do people put themselves through it, if the heat is so awful?!

I like mid-high 20s so we tend to go away in the May & October holidays and spend the summer here.

We go to the Mediterranean usually. May and September/October are wonderful, no crowds, lovely temps. We went in July last year - to a place we’d been before, it was so hot and so crowded we spent all the time round the villa pool, it was fine, but id rather it was 28 than 38 degrees!

It's tricky as the weather is just so unpredictable.

I wouldn't do Southern Europe in july/ Aug as dc don't like it too hot. I would if I only needed to relax, but don't want to be wrangling kids in high temps.

However northern Europe is too unpredictable. Can be beautiful (UK this week is perfect), but can also pour down and be grey and miserable. I don't want my summer holiday in a kagoul.

I've also had weather like that in Northern France and Scandinavia.

We're going to alps soon and weather looks decidedly mixed (glorious this week before we get there annoyingly).

Climate change will make holidays increasingly unpredictable, thoughthat will be the least of the issues

It's so different when you're on holiday, we go to Florida every year and there isn't one single place or transport without good proper air-conditioning, it makes a huge difference. I'm from Ireland and it's rare to get a shop with aircon , buses are so rubbish here that the heating is on 80% of the time, it's hell for people working. Our houses are not designed for hot weather but homes in hot countries are which is brilliant, same with work places. I actually prefer going to a hot country as I know there'll be things in place to help with the heat so that you can enjoy your holiday and the sun.

Dd and family have just had a brilliant week in Corfu, maybe not quite as hot there, but lovely warm sea, which was one of the reasons for going south.

Good point. I always forget about the sea. The warm sea is the absolute best bit, because we tend to spend hours in it.

It's why, as much as I love Portugal, I'm not doing a family beach holiday there, because the sea's too cold to bob about in. Same with the beaches by me this week. And I don't trust the beaches my me in terms of cleanliness. I like to see what I'm standing in.

I could just about cope with that, but would get bored after a few days of laying around.

The biggest issue is the nighttime heat for me, I just can’t sleep when it’s hot - if there was AC I could soldier through😅

Book somewhere with air conditioning and go on boat trips and try different water sports and you won’t even notice the heat.

We love the heat! We do some sight seeing and chilling by the pool mostly. We live in Scotland the weather here is utterly shit, summers are shit and the winters are long, dark and cold. Those 2 weeks of 35c plus a year gives me something to look forward too.

Just back from a week in Greece. Up and out by 7-7:30 for a lovely walk in the cool air up in the hills, back for 10 ish, via the bakery, to wake up my teens...then lots of pool and beach time, nap for them then out late for dinner at around 10pm, ice creams and a wander about, sleep and repeat. 30 ish degrees in the afternoons, warm evenings. Was just lovely.
