Has anyone successfully lost weight and toned by using just a treadmill/ walking

Obviously also watching what you eat.

I can't do a gym for many reasons. I have looked at and have in my basket one of the small treadmills. That has good reviews after weeks of contemplating it. I just need to press buy now ! But I want to hear stories good and bad , were they good, did you achieve what you wanted.

I have got better at walking to the shops rather than take car when I can. Leaving for school run 30 min early and going for a walk prior

I want to jog too. Well try. But I don't have confidence to do it outside.

I usually make rash decisions but this time I don't want to waste my money

Running which started with run/walking and swimming, yes.

But not just walking

mindutopia · 12/08/2025 21:59

A treadmill is boring as hell. I mean it’s better than nothing if you truly aren’t able to leave your house to exercise. Eg single parent, no childcare, can only exercise at 9pm after baby is asleep.

I much prefer walking outside though. Yes, I have gotten fit and lost weight just walking, but I was training for and completing a multi day hike. So was walking 2-3 times a week, 10-20 miles at time for 6 months or so. You would be hard pressed to do that on a treadmill. You’d be much better off walking an hour at lunch every day or carving out time on the weekends if that’s easier. With a treadmill you have to be really disciplined and slog on through even if you’re bored.

You also need somewhere to store the bloody thing.

Maybe I could get to running in time.

I can't swim

Thank you
Storage isn't bad I have a garage with plenty of space or the conservatory.

I did wonder if it would be boring. I'm very on the fence right now.

I had a treadmill. I used it religiously every night..
As a clothes horse for my towel and clothes..
Same weight and height as you op.
For a month so far I have stopped all cakes /biscuits /white bread and crap and lost quite easily 7 lb...
I haven't upped my daily lifestyle as in haven't walked more or done specific exercise... Recently recovering from a previous injury so need to start slowly...

woolflower · 12/08/2025 22:07

Walking is a great for helping to speed up weight loss when you’re in a calorie deficit.

But it won’t tone, and extra walking without adjusting your diet isn’t a feasible way to loose weight.

Increasing your step count, eating in a deficit and some resistance training would be the ideal if you want to loose weight and gain tone.

That's great . I was 13.11 in June. I've just been more careful on portion sizes and as said prior walked rather than drive places. But 2 jobs , after school clubs etc time is limited. I was thinking I can treadmill in the evening whislt watching tv

Thank you. Yes I will definitely start to calorie count

Yes but it took patience and perseverance and a lot of steps. By the end of the first year, I’d lost several stones. Was averaging 20,000 steps each day then. Could eat peas off of my stomach 😁 at 50, first time I’d had a completely flat stomach in my life. Low carb, around 1,500 calories a day give and take.

Covid buggered it up, CEV husband, too scared to go out, but getting there again now.

Bluefloor · 12/08/2025 22:16

I’ve got a walking pad for WFH, I find time goes very quickly and very easy to increase my step count for the day whilst working because my brain isn’t concentrating on the walking.

Issahotone · 12/08/2025 22:21

OP, I just walk due to a long standing injury last summer that occurred while I was exercising! I’ve lost 1.5 stone since then so it’s been slow and steady, but I do feel my calorie deficit had the most impact on getting my weight down .

On weeks where my diet is under control and I don’t walk much I still may lose weight. But if it’s the other way around (eating unhealthily and excessively but walking a lot l) I will often put on a pound or two. So I feel my diet has the biggest impact. And by diet I just mean what I eat - not any particular fad diet.

I have a walking pad but don’t always use it. Sometimes I’ll be on it every day in a week sometimes I don’t get on it for weeks.

I do think it’s worth it though considering how much I used to spend for my gym membership. It’s often cold and dark and walking outside isn’t always practical or desirable for me, so I like having my walking pad. I mostly do gentle walking exercises from YouTube or march on the spot while watching tv or listening to music. That’s also an option if you don’t want a treadmill/walking pad.

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2025 22:31

Yes walking is a great exercise and if you do it at pace can be just as good as running without the pounding - some people are not suited to running. I’d suggest getting two sets of dumbbells - 2kg to start and a 5kg set - and look at you tube for a routine. I used to do Cindy Crawford Next Challenge and was very toned doing that plus walking several miles a day (to or from work).
I have a walking treadmill and the benefit is I can use it in bad weather. I tend to watch YouTube when on it, though a friend has it at her desk, though I can’t see how she can keep a good pace while typing simultaneously. A treadmill is also useful if you like to record your speed and distance and improvement over time.
But the battle if the bulge is won in the kitchen. Eat in a deficit fur weight loss. Exercise for fitness.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 12/08/2025 22:41

I walk (but outside with the dog as I’d imagine we’d get tangled up on a. Treadmill 🤣) but also use wrist weights to tone my arms which works well.

before the dog I had an elliptical trainer with arm levers and that was great in front of the TV and more forgiving on the joints than a treadmill

Lafufufu · 12/08/2025 22:45

Yes I lost the first 10kg with a treadmill at highest speeds I did about 3 hrs per day and was hot on my diet

justaddittothelist · 12/08/2025 22:59

A good few years ago I had a treadmill in my garage. I hooked a TV up on the wall and walked at a reasonable speed while watching a programme (usually game shows) I walked during the show and jogged during all the adverts. I did this around 5 days a week and I lost two stone relatively quickly- although I also massively reduced my calories as well.

I found it quite enjoyable overall, but certainly had to force myself into the garage to do it at times.

I don't have a garage or the time now sadly 😕

MeridaBrave · 12/08/2025 23:05

You can’t “tone” on a treadmill. That’s because “toning” requires both the following: a) improving muscle tone by resistance training and b) fat loss to
expose the muscle tone. Clearly the fat loss needs to be done mostly with diet, but extra movement helps. Treadmill and walking will help burn calories but they not help with muscle tone. And it won’t help at all unless you eat in a calorie deficit.

No need to go to the gym can do Caroline Girvan at home with dumbells (and eat enough protein).

Thank you. Will look into weight's too.

Not for weight loss. But I suggest you consider a reclining exercise bike. I don't know what issues you face but I have a bad back. The recliner is comfortable to sit it, supports my back, doesn't leave me worried about falling off and has handlebars for getting on/off. I'm 63 with arthritis.

ShodAndShadySenators · 04/02/2026 14:27

Have you considered a cross trainer OP? It exercises your arms as well as your legs and bum. I have a monitor in front of mine so I can watch stuff like music videos, it helps the hour pass really well. Obviously you need to diet alongside increased exercise for weight loss but increasing your exercise is very beneficial in other ways, so definitely worth a pop if gym membership won't work for you.
