Got rid of FIL for one night! Need film for teen to bond

Help! My teen, 17 is bored and sad - don’t know why. He ACTUALLY asked if he could watch a film with us tonight .. and FIL is here AGAIN. I said brightly, great idea! Let’s watch a film in the other room and DH says he’s too tired. WTAF. FIL is here AL THE TIME. Teen off to college in 4 weeks but in the meantime really? Can we not have family time without grump grandad? I’ve told him to take FIL home but now I need to find a film quick to lure abandoned teen out of his room.
hes put up with FIL AS HAVE I, since September so he’s not spoilt
Film for 17 years olds boy please!

Classic that he hasn’t seen, Predator, Alien, Terminator.

Why is fil constantly at yours and have you told Dh to limit his visits?

Pancakeflipper · 12/08/2025 19:51

Has he seen Die Hard?

OK it's a Christmas film and it is August.....

DrEmilyCrabtree · 12/08/2025 19:54

Hot Fuzz

MamaElephantMama · 12/08/2025 19:56

My teenager enjoyed watching Happy Gilmore 1 and 2 on Netflix with us last week.

Mumdiva99 · 12/08/2025 19:56

I went through this with my daughter a few days ago....finally I settled on The Matrix - 'seen it mum'!!
Get son sat in front of netflix and ask him to choose.
Or find a film with The Rock in - we always all enjoy those- even when very cheesy.

Lazydaze123 · 12/08/2025 19:56

Happy Gilmore 1 & 2 on Netflix now, ridiculous and hilarious

JurassicPark4Eva · 12/08/2025 19:56

Jurassic Park. Obv.

Or Jurassic World?

Myjobisridiculous · 12/08/2025 19:59

Silence of the lambs, a classic,
Might get rid of FIL

Milliejacksonhouseforsale · 12/08/2025 20:07

Scum a British cult classic
A light-hearted tale about borstal.
Ok maybe not so light-hearted.😁

Invisablepanic · 12/08/2025 20:28

I agree with PPs a classic would be good. Maybe Gladiator, fight club, American History X or Shawshank Redemption. Or if your into horror Scream, Final Destination or I know what you did last summer.

If you have the time I would also say do Lord of The Rings over a few nights.

Total stars! Thank you SO MUCH. DH took fil home- I don’t think dh has any idea how draining fil is. He’s ok, but there’s only so many times I can listen to the same stories about cricket. We ended up with silence of the lambs, yikes it’s creepy! And a ton of popcorn and ice cream. I just wanted ds to feel wanted and that it’s his home, and he’s important .he still sloped off as soon as film was over 🙂but I guess that’s ok.
and more good films to choose from too-
thank you guys!
P.s. what do you all do with teen sons in the evening? I need tips on how to be friends - he’s in his room all day, totally bored and obviously doesn’t want to hang out with me, but his mates all seem to be busy.

DS had a job to keep him reasonably busy, but at that age did spend a lot of his spare time holed up in his room. Dinner time was our social time. He liked programmes like IT crowd, 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown so watched those with him

healthybychristmas · 13/08/2025 07:02

Why don't you look online for list of cult classics? You could both have a binge of those before he goes to uni.

Myjobisridiculous · 13/08/2025 08:16

@Parentsinlaw glad silence of the lambs was a hit,
How to be friends with teen boys?? ……..
Good Food!! always brings them to the table. Xx

triplechoc · 13/08/2025 08:48

TV wise, we tend to work our way through box sets rather than trying to find films that we all like - most recently Ted Lasso, also all the NCIS variations, or other police/detective type stuff, Death in Paradise. He also loves a quiz show, esp House of Games and The Chase, although that tends to be me and him rather than with his Dad too.

Parentsinlaw · 13/08/2025 09:05

Thank you.
im super sensitive as FIL is now living round the corner and is not used to being alone and constantly here. I feel bad for him, but my time is getting eaten and my focus is obviously my son. More juggling . It’s knackering!

What aboyt getting him ready for college - planning purchases, online shopping? Or if you have any funds take him out to bowling or similar.

HaddlerScoop · 13/08/2025 10:24

We have dinner as a family and watch a tv series or half a film every night. Is he 17 almost 18 and off to uni? 4 weeks seems like that is the case. Maybe limited to films rather than tv shows unless you are happy to stop at one series of something. Blue Lights (iplayer) Severance (Apple) Reacher (Amazon Prime)

Classic films, Hot Fuzz, Die Hard, The Rock, Shawshank (brilliant but some brutal scenes which I fast forwarded over for my sons) Sixth Sense, Con Air. Top Secret which I still find stupidly funny - trailer

6 Underground, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Grand Budapest. I suppose it depends what he finds funny and what you have access to streaming wise or if you are willing to pay to rent stuff.

My sons are 19 and 22 but we have always watched things together and gives you something to talk to them about too.

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 10:26

Die Hard is not a Christmas film.

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 10:27

Shang Chi and the Legend of the ten rings is good!

Notquitegrownup2 · 13/08/2025 10:32

Oh bless him. I remember that last month before college - ready to move on/become an adult/bored at home, but also scared/uncertain about change/not sure what to look for . . .

Well done on surviving Silence of the Lambs! That's motherly love, for you! Make sure that you book some evening classes/activities for yourself for September so that you can get out and about and have some non-cricket conversation. You will cope with Dh and FiL more easily if your brain is getting some fun and activity, and they can have some father and son time . . .

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 10:26

Die Hard is not a Christmas film.

I agree. It's a film that is set at Christmas, but to qualify as a Christmas film, Christmas has to form part of the plot line, which it does not.

HowardTJMoon · 13/08/2025 10:53

You can't beat Pacific Rim. It's big, loud, dumb and absolutely glorious fun. Don't bother with Pacific Rim 2.

CosmicEcho · 13/08/2025 11:11

Can you watch a series with him? My dc like Squid games, Stranger Things, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad.
We do a Wordle challenge most days which is a nice short thing to do.
Teach/ get him to cook or bake?
Do some stargazing if the sky is clear. Currently you might be able to spot some meteors.
