Would you buy a house close to your friends?

As in the same street. Literally yards away.

No I wouldn’t, I’m pretty antisocial.

I like seeing my friends but on my terms and not them just popping in,

dh wanted us to buy a house about 5 doors away from his parents and around the corner from his friends, that was an easy NO from me!

Come on OP, tell us what you actually want to discuss...
Have you seen a house you love but are put off making an offer because of proximity to your friends or are friends moving in very close to you and this irrationally annoys you?
(I'm suspecting it's the latter from your reactions so far)

Not sure it’s irrational. I’m finding it quite claustrophobic.

Exactly!

Yes! Everywhere I have lived I have had very good friends in walking distance, but to be fair most of the friendships were made when I moved so technically we already live near to one another. We are always going for walks or going for coffee or lunch together. And I know that we have those friendships close by if we need anything, and vice versa.

But I wouldn't hesitate to buy near to close friends and would actually really love it. But DH and I are pretty sociable people so understand it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

I’m definitely finding that it’s not my cup of tea!

@GetOuttaMySkipkeep trying to maintain boundaries. Tbh you don’t own the street and anyone is free to move anywhere.

My sister lives directly across the street from me and my best friend lives 6 doors away. Wasn’t planned like that. It just happened that way. My best friend was here first, then I moved in, then my sister.

There’s always someone around. I love that my nieces and nephews are always in and out, there’s always someone close by to have each others dogs for the day if needed and other things like that. No taxis needed for parties at birthdays or Christmas and new year. In fact birthday mornings are one of my favourite things because everyone gathers in the birthday house in our pyjamas for the birthday child getting up. Sister regularly runs over to use my tumble dryer. Teenagers never have far to stomp when they fall out with their mums and need a break 😂 I’ve run to my best friends with wet hair in the past when my hair dryer blew up. She regularly get dinner from me because I’m incapable of judging pasta and always make enough to get the treat.

I absolutely love it

No but my sister and our husbands have chosen to live near to each other. My younger sister is my best friend and we see each other every day.

Oscarsmom71 · 12/08/2025 21:24

I wouldn’t like it tbh. I have friends who live a few streets away but wouldn’t like it to be where they can see me coming and going as I have friends who pester me to go out more than I want to so occasionally make excuses.
i like my space.
I don’t get close to neighbours for that very reason.

2 of them yes. In fact I used to live about 4 houses away from my closest friend for many years. Still see each other weekly.

Closest friend I guess is different. My best friend lives 200 miles away. Perhaps I’d feel completely different if she moved here.

These are not my best friends and I don’t wish to see them every day 😕

You’re going to have to use your words and tell them how you feel! You don’t exist to provide entertainment for your friends. I’d rather risk falling out with them than have them dropping in daily.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 12/08/2025 23:04

Honestly it completely depends on the friend. One yes one no.
