Getting spiders out of the car

Pringlebeak · 12/08/2025 08:22

Last week we took some gardening waste to the tip and inadvertently unleashed a creepy crawly apocalypse in the car in the process. We got rid of most of them quite quickly, but there was a very large spider we disposed of that seems to have left behind its entire collection of offspring.

I thought I'd hoovered them all up but yesterday one was discovered chilling out in its web on the back passenger door, much to the consternation of my teenage daughter and her friend, who were sitting in the back at the time. Since my eardrums and heart are too old to withstand that kind of shrieking every time I get in the car, how can I make sure I've got rid of all the spiders? I'm told that the most obvious methods - flamethrower, agent orange, submerging the car in a lake etc - will invalidate my insurance policy. Anyone have any suggestions?

Huh?

just keep an eye out and then vacuum up or bit of paper and hoof them out

Branster · 12/08/2025 08:25

No idea OP but that's an absolute nightmare. Sell the car and make it somebody else's problem.

Someiremember · 12/08/2025 08:25

You have extrapolated the spider left a nest of eggs from the fact your dd spotted one spider?

Yes, I've done that. But I want to be sure I've got them all so we don't find ourselves with unexpected passengers while doing 70 on the M1.

Just use a glass and a bit of paper whenever you see one.

No, we've spotted quite a few since last week, but only that one while driving.

That works very well in the house, yes.

What? While doing 70mph on the M1?

They hide in the car while it's stationary and only come out when the car is moving.

Oh I read this and assumed that you’d seen just one since thinking you’d hoovered all up last week

I thought I'd hoovered them all up but yesterday one was discovered

Theunamedcat · 12/08/2025 08:31

Rub some peppermint oil around as a repellent hope they spontaneously leave?

Just keep hoovering and disturbing them they will move on

Whatton · 12/08/2025 08:35

Install a cat permanently in your car, if that fails you could always just make the kids sit on the roof, spiders dont tend to chill out up there

Do they? Other than getting rid of them whenever she sees them I'm not sure what else OP can do. Lots of places for spiders to hide that you can't reach with a vacuum.

Well exactly

nothing can really be done but it doesn’t sound like a big problem anyway

ApocalypseNowt · 12/08/2025 08:42

Gather some neighbourhood cats and pop them in there for an hour or so.

VioletandDill · 12/08/2025 08:52

Peppermint oil and persistence! They'll go eventually. Keep disturbing them. I don't know if there are spider specific bug bombs?

I sympathise as had the same issue after garden waste to the tip. Nowadays I go totally OTT and double bag my garden waste bin with wheelie bin bags, which I cut open at the tip!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 12/08/2025 09:19

If you've got a portable vacuum, id keep it charged and in the backseat of the car

And leave strict instructions to dd not to scream when youre driving

My dd(6) loves to randomly scream, giving me a heartattack every time 😅

Pringlebeak · 12/08/2025 11:25

Oh I might try some peppermint oil. If nothing else it'll get rid of the lingering odour from when DD threw up that one time. 😅

“Disposed of”?
How?
Spiders are crucial.

Cam1981 · 12/08/2025 11:28

Raid fly spray the one with the eucalyptus. Spray loads close the car doors leave it for a bit

Not crawling up your thigh while you're navigating peak nutter lorry driver rush hour on the M62 they're not. At that time they are distinctly surplus to requirements.

Honestly wouldn’t bother me. I’ve a web in my car atm that’s been there since winter. Love spiders.

Mousehi · 12/08/2025 11:32

Agree. Just sell the car. Get a bike. You can hose down a bike.
