My latest food shop price

This is crazy?!! My last online food shop was £160 for a weeks shop. Before Covid that would have been the cost of a December pre xmas shop.

Did not buy many actual meals either as going away for a few days. Just buying for late teen kids staying at home with dogs.

This is nuts right?

How are people doing it ?

It is mad. I spent £75 at Lidl yesterday and another £65 at Sainsbury's today. That did include dog food and a couple of joints of meat as having a family do at the weekend but not even got anything for weekday meals so dh will sort this with smaller daily shops. We do currently have two kids home from Uni but yes we are really struggling. I was pleased to get a few bargains this evening, a joint of beef down from £31 to £9 and some cheap pates and bread to freeze.

Without knowing what it is you are buying, who knows if that was "reasonable " in these times or not?

I could say I spend £60 a week for 3 adults - but that's just as meaningless

Depends on what you bought it along with size of packets etc

Was it own brand or not? Was it mainly pre-prepared food? Nothing wrong with that its much more expensive.

I can’t afford coffee anymore.

Aldi Alcafe wholebean instant is still under £3 & tastes just like the nescafe version.

GeneticallyModifiedGrump · 12/08/2025 06:01

We spent £150 at the weekend, need to go back to Aldi tonight for something for tea!
It's insane!

Thank you, I shall give it a try!

It absolutely does not. Why do people keep saying that shit brands taste exactly the same as branded. It doesn’t, it never has and never will. You are lying to yourselves to justify it

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 12/08/2025 08:11

The coffee I like was on offer so I got it. But all the other brands were 7-9 quid!

I got a few ready meals as the kids need easy stuff while we are away but surely a few ready meals can't push the price up to a equivalent of an Xmas shop and this has happened for months now. It's getting worse and worse every month.

When we had a family of.6 living at home 3 of them heavily into sports our average foodbill was £130 a week.

Now there are 4 of us only one heavily into sports (so needing protein and doesnt use powders) and the weekly shop is £175 -200 depending on how much meat I purchase. That is within the last 8 years.

Confusedcookie · 12/08/2025 11:16

When I first moved out my shop used to be about £35 a week and almost every item was below £1 with a few £2-3 items, this was Aldi in 2019 and a shop just for myself. Now for me and my husband it usually costs £100 give or take. He likes a few more branded things but it's so annoying how much everything has gone up.
