Changing the name of a house?

Our new home has a name and house number. I dislike the name and would like to change it.

I know there is a cost associated with changing the name of a house. But can anyone tell me if the process is a relatively simple one? How long does it take? Are there any issues I should be aware of when it comes to changing the name of a house? Problems with deliveries, etc? The house also has a number so it reads: XName, 51 X Road

If for some reason we decide to just remove the name all together and only go with the house number, do we need to contact the council so formally or are we ok just to use the house number and road address details down for post, online deliveries, etc? For legal documents I'm guessing we'd still need to use the house name?

If your house has a name and a number I am pretty sure that you can just stop using the name. My previous house only had a name when we bought it, then Royal Mail numbered the road. Gradually, over many years, various organisations, such as council and anything that uses an address search dropped the name and we became just number 20, although family still used both. When I sold that house all the original legal documents only had the house name but I had no problems.
Changing a house name when you do not have a number is very different…..

Our old house had a name, we very seldom used it. Just using the number is fine.

We had neighbours who insisted on using only the name, not the number, that caused problems for delivery people.

Just drop the name and use the number. You can choose a new name but there is a process to go through with the council, Royal Mail, Land Registry, etc. Enjoy your new home!

Watching with interest as my lane had an original name that fell into disuse with a new numbering systems I would like to add the make up my house as ‘xx cottage’ a a reference to that - do I need to register it (a would keep the number as well for Amazon)

We changed the name of our house as it was too close to the name of a neighbour’s house and was causing confusion. As I recall we just had to apply to the council and they told everyone else.

In your shoes I’d just drop the name. You may find the name isn’t part of the formal address anyway- you can check this on Royal Mail website.

What shows if you look it up on Royal Mail address finder? If that only shows the number then the name is unofficial anyway and you can use it or not or change it.

Good point. I should check this.

Thanks for the comments everyone. We're still undecided whether we change the name or drop it all together.

Most of the houses on the road have names, but they're all very similar which rings alarm bells for causing confusion. Although they've been like that for 50+ years, so I suppose the delivery drivers will know and most likely just use the house number associated with it anyway
