I want to scream about my hot feet

Just wtf is wrong with them?

I’ve had this for about ten years. Apparently randomly, at night the soles will feel hot to the point it keeps me awake. I’ve tried all sorts over the years to help them. The best seems to be a damp lightweight towel or similar over them but even that’s not cutting it tonight.

I can’t find a pattern to it. It’s probably more common in the summer months but doesn’t seem to be caused by hot nights (I know it’s v warm tonight), or having had a drink, or anything else I can work out.

I don’t have great circulation (actually seem to have Reynauds, which feels like some kind of twisted joke right at this moment).

It’s such a bloody PITA.

I have exactly the same, have done since I was a nipper. I find a really strong moisturiser before bed helps - I use zeroderm

beachwalkx · 11/08/2025 01:18

You could try a gel ice pack? Or a hot water bottle kept in the fridge (if you do this it needs to be separate to one you use for hot water) or a cooling mat might work, one of the pet ones

Springadorable · 11/08/2025 02:03

I find an antihistamine sometimes helps.

Try cutting out sugar.

BooneyBeautiful · 11/08/2025 02:37

Alpha lipoic acid is your friend! I suffer from this to the extent that it wakes me up in the night and then I can't get back to sleep again. Taking alpha lipoic acid makes a huge improvement! I still suffer from it now, but very infrequently.

FeralWoman · 11/08/2025 03:09

A dog cooling mat that’s been frozen gives my DH good relief from his hot feet in bed.

Have you tried compression socks like you get post op in hospital? Might help to keep the blood flowing.

considertheravens · 11/08/2025 04:12

Socks in the freezer before bed might help. I was told to put sheets in the freezer before bed when PG during a blistering hot summer.

ZaZathecat · 11/08/2025 05:52

I don't have the answer but same here, and the Reynaud's too.- maybe they're connected

Oatsamazing · 11/08/2025 06:26

I have had similar in the past, I take 200mg ferrous sulphate most days and magnesium glycinate and a multivitamin and haven't had it for ages. I started taking these supplements to keep my restless legs at bay but the burning feet has completely gone since starting them.

Mousehi · 11/08/2025 06:29

I have similar but it's due to a lower back issue and nerve damage.

myplace · 11/08/2025 06:31

I thought it was peri menopause related. It has improved massively since menopause.

However I suspect that’s actually because I take amitriptyline/nortriptyline. I just realised I started taking that when they improved.

taxidriver · 11/08/2025 06:33

have you had a blood test, specifically diabetes test

Was going to say this. I came up positive for T2 diabetes last year and the diabetes nurse was confident I’d had it for years unknown based on the truly awful blood sugar levels and the fact that subsequent testing showed damage to my retina, nerves and circulation in my feet.

I knew last year that I felt like absolute shit but thought it was just the joys of being fat, juggling a full time very demanding job and being a mum. Other than burning feet do you have any of these:

Tired
thirsty
peeing a lot especially waking up in the middle of the night
darkened/velvety skin around neck, underarms and/or groin
skin tags around neck, underarms and/or groin
changes in weight
,

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 11/08/2025 07:20

it is linked to Raynauds. Do you have a diagnosis / treatment / have you told your sr about the feet?

AsanteSanaS · 11/08/2025 07:37

Thank you all. Sorry to those in the same boat; it gets miserable in the small hours. To answer a few questions:

  • Diabetes - I’m at risk of T2 so checked yearly and levels are fine - still 30s
  • Cooling measures - they do give valuable relief. I’d love not to have the problem at all. Not desperately organised but I should load up a freezer drawer!
  • Will look into the supplements, thanks. @Oatsamazing, I had restless legs in pregnancy and do not wish to repeat that so might start there if it’d ever help prevent those, just in case!

@boulevardofbrokendreamss I may have to, in that case. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone about it but it’s (of course) been lifelong. My fingers can white out in the middle of summer months if it’s the wrong day. Do you know more about the link?

I get hot feet at night and I find the best solution is to run my feet and ankles under the cold tap, pat dry until
damp and then moisturise them well. If I don’t then I wake up in the night with them boiling me to death and I get all overwhelmed if my feet feel hot! I feel your pain OP as it’s not a nice sensation!

Did you see my suggestion of alpha lipoic acid capsules? I found out about them via the Internet and if I stop taking them, the hot feet return with a vengeance!

BooneyBeautiful · 11/08/2025 09:10

Mousehi · 11/08/2025 06:29

I have similar but it's due to a lower back issue and nerve damage.

I can relate as I have a huge amount of nerve damage caused by a massive lumbar disc prolapse. I highly recommend taking alpha lipoic acid capsules. They help tremendously!

LittleGreenDragons · 11/08/2025 09:12

Get your B12 tested as low results can cause burning feet, pins and needles etc. Vegans and vegetarians are particularly susceptible to this.

I did! Thanks. It’s on the list to check out 🙂

Also now on the list, thanks (and I’m setting a reminder for Berocca in the meantime).

I would see your GP, I wonder if it's actually that you aren't noticing that the circulation has been cut off or has gone very low to your feet and the burning sensation is actually blood flow returning, I've had that before, and it's the cut off circulation that needs treatment rather than the burning sensation itself?

notapizzaeater · 11/08/2025 09:45

My mum has this, I’m off to buy the alpha lipoic capsules - when do you take them ?

I know what you mean but it’s not quite the same sensation, and when it kicks off it doesn’t matter what I’ve been doing in the evening. And it goes onnnnnnn! I’ve booked a B12 test, though, so am starting with that + looking at the recommended supplements, and once I’ve got the test result I think I’ll speak to the GP. It started around my late 20s and it’s definitely not improving.

Extra frustrating that I can’t find a pattern so can’t predict it - I had high hopes for an early night last night!

My feet feel like I’m walking on a hot radiator sometimes. I have Peripheral Neuropathy in my feet thanks to cancer treatment.
