Dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia

My DD9 has just been diagnosed with moderate dyslexia, and quite pronounced dyscalculia. She has very little concept of numbers as an amount of anything. She is awaiting a dyspraxia assessment but it’s pretty much a formality, she has very marked issues with motor skills, balance and coordination. She also has issues with emotional regulation but I think this is because she struggles to process things.

Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with the same kind of issues please. I want to find out all I can so that I can give her as much help as possible.

Thank you.

Isnt the current think that all the ‘D’s go together.

So your list plus ASD and ADHD.

This could be affecting her emotional regulation.

Yes my DS has dyslexia and dyscalculia plus ADHD, dysgraphia and sensory processing issues and hypermobility.

I’m unsure about the dyscalculia diagnosis because now he’s at a supportive school he is doing incredibly well at maths.

It was a very long expensive battle against school and council to get him any support. I pretty much only managed to get them to agree to a laptop.

The best thing I did to support him was teach him to touch type from age six which has solved the issues with handwriting and helped spelling to some extent.

Recognising that he learns differently and not pushing him to read but listening to audio books and his general knowledge, vocabulary and comprehension is outstanding so it hasn’t held him back.

there are many areas of weakness but he is thriving albeit in a private school with very small classes. - I’m very lucky I can fund this.

He has EQ in bundles so no issues with emotional regulation but at primary school he was off sick a lot and I wonder if it was stress from being unsupported with his needs.

It is really positive the school are on board for your dc. That is so important to getting the right support.

My 6yo is starting assessments in Sept. Myself and the school are expecting the outcome to be diagnosis of ADHD and sensory processing disorder. We can both also see dyspraxia and PDA (pathological demand avoidance - apparently this is most associated with autism, but new studies are now showing a higher association with ADHD) in him too so he may end up with diagnosis of these too but not sure. He can barely hold a pencil and hates writing and drawing.

if your child is very emotional, clingy, anxious, has low self esteem and low resilience then I would look into PDA / autism / adhd for them as well as these seem to be linked to dyslexia / dyspraxia etc. All present v differently in different types of children ie not all adhd kids are physically bouncing off the walls, not all autistic kids are quiet and antisocial, etc
