What do you do with a butter dish?

I don’t get it - do you keep them in the fridge? Does that not mean it’s impossibly hard to spread?
but if you keep them on the side does the butter not melt during the summer?

I’d like to make the change from a spread to a block butter but my tiny little mind can’t work this out!

We keep it on top of our bread box, only dh uses it and we just put a small amount in.

It sits on the worktop unless it's very hot, in which case I only put a bit of the block of butter out at a time.

Why did I never think of this? I always put the whole block out and waste it. 😮

myplace · 11/08/2025 06:56

@VeryStressedMum the water content is very low so it doesn’t go off in the same way oil doesn’t go off.
It will eventually- several weeks on the side in winter would be no problem, in summer it would turn- but it never lasts that long as I eat it all!

Yellow butter (anchor) is already slightly fermented and salted so it lasts much longer than white butter (lurpak).

I use a butter bell - traditional French design. The butter keeps fresher as less air gets at it and if the weather is warm just replace the cold water more frequently.

My kitchen stays around 20C (a bit warmer on hot days) and the butter is soft but not melted.

YourWinter · 11/08/2025 10:53

My kitchen is lovely and cool and my butter dish stays out on the side by the toaster.

DongDingBell · 11/08/2025 11:16

Winter - whole block sits on the side.
High summer, half a block of butter, in the butter dish.

TheOnlyThing · 11/08/2025 11:21

Mine sits on the side all year round with no problems, just not too close to the Aga

BadActingParsley · 11/08/2025 11:25

you need a luminarc glass one - it keeps butter cool and spreadable except in depths of winter or proper hot summer. So we rarely keep it in the fridge. Proper butter is so much nice than spready butter.....

We keep the butter dish in the cupboard with the jams, honey, etc, because of the cats. There’s just the two of us, and we don’t use much, because of DH’s cardiovascular disease. It’s never gone off!

pontivex · 11/08/2025 11:29

Keep it on the side. In summer only cut off a small slice to keep you going for a few days and replenish. Rest of the block in the fridge.

EveryDayisFriday · 11/08/2025 11:44

I use small plastic lidded tubs with around 25g butter in the cupboard. I have 2 tubs so one is in the wash/ clean and the other in use.

A small amount of butter rarely spoils as it's used up quickly.

SantanaBinLorry · 11/08/2025 11:48

Break them 😭 Three in 2 years here.
Now we use whatever small bowl is available. Small chunks takes from tje fridge every couple of day, kept on the side by the toaster
(With a peice of parchment over the top for a lid 😭)

ChompandaGrazia · 11/08/2025 11:57

Like everyone else I keep it on the side in the kitchen. My kitchen it quite cool so it never goes off. I just make sure it’s out of direct sunlight.

OSTMusTisNT · 11/08/2025 12:04

I tend to keep the main block in the fridge and put a smaller amount in the butter dish left out on the kitchen counter in a shady area.

I was reading recently that us butter eating people will probably not live as long as our Flora eating parents as butter isn't good for you but I honestly would still rather have the butter and skip the care home stage 😆.

GasPanic · 11/08/2025 12:21

It's not the dish but the lid that works for me. Keeps nasty stuff off the butter when you keep it outside the fridge.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 11/08/2025 12:29

Well no, it's not kept in the fridge because as you said that would totally defeat the purpose.

I cut a reasonably sized sliver (about 1/4 of a block) and keep that in the butter dish. Replenish as needed.

In extremely hot weather I just keep enough out for or a day or two at a time.

It's nice to always have spreadable butter available.

VeryStressedMum · 11/08/2025 18:14

@myplacethank you

mondaytosunday · 11/08/2025 19:28

Sits out. Yes it gets quite soft in the summer just makes it easier to spread.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 11/08/2025 20:17

Thank you! I have ordered a butter dish and added block butter to my shopping delivery.

On the counter , glass dish with lid , we are in the SE and it only gets so melty that I put it in the fridge about 3/4 days a year .

reluctantbrit · 11/08/2025 20:22

Outside, next to the toaster from September - April/May.

June - August - depends on the weather, at the moment it's in the fridge.

nailgungohome · 11/08/2025 22:06

Only needed to put ours in the fridge on perhaps 8 days this summer so far. It’s fine out on the side.

Clingfilm · 11/08/2025 22:58

We use ours as a sort of barometer, if it rips the bread, wear a jumper, if it glides onto the bread with a glosssy sheen, wear a tshirt. It just stays out on the counter all year.

Once you go full butter on your toast and sandwiches you never go back to spreads.

HonoriaBulstrode · 11/08/2025 23:01

Yes, I can always tell how cold it's been overnight by how hard the butter is in the morning.

DiscoBeat · 11/08/2025 23:24

We have a tiny butter dish and just put a little square of butter in to keep out, it usually lasts a day or two. I wouldn't use one of those huge ones that can house an entire pack of butter.
