Do You Reckon You Wear The Correct Size Bra?

Apparently something like 70% of women wear the wrong size (not sure if that’s UK women). I’ve been for 2 fittings at M & S in the last month or so & hoping the lady I saw today has got it right! Her colleague that I saw before ended up selling me a bra that was actually smaller than the one I’d arrived in ( I didn’t question it until later on as I presumed it was because it was a different style) but it gradually got tighter as the day went on. She’d said that if it turned out that I needed to wear my extender with that bra, which I did, I could then try the next band size up with the same cup size. I ordered 2, meaning I’d spent just over £50 altogether, but unfortunately the same thing happened even with the extender on.
Today, the assistant reckoned I was another band size up & that I fell between 2 cup sizes. I bought 2 different styles of non wired bra in a 42C & so far so good, although obviously I’m allowing for a certain snugness as it’s brand new. Fingers crossed! I was in pain & it even affected my eating so more often than not I went bra less after a certain time of day to get comfortable. Do any of you struggle with bras?

I was in the wrong bra size when I got measured at M and S. They measured me as 36D when I was actually a 30HH. I knew it felt wrong and my breasts were droopy and uncomfortable, but as an awkward teen I didn't know where else to go or what the problem was. Going to John Lewis (and later Bravissimo) and getting a proper bra fitting was life changing. I don't know know how M and S get away with being so rubbish.

Devilsmommy · 10/08/2025 17:40

I think I was wearing the wrong size for years but finally did the boob and bust measurements and got the size bra it said and I honestly don't even feel like I'm wearing one most of the time. I think finding the right bra style is just as important as the size iyswim

Karistyleaftea · 10/08/2025 17:45

Boob and Bust measurement worked well for me.

I don’t trust bra fitters. Most of them haven’t a clue. I know how to measure properly but I don’t like underwires so I just go with non-wired bras in the size that look right to me and feel comfortable. I don’t give a shit what the letters and numbers say.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 10/08/2025 17:55

You're 100% in the wrong size. Go on the boob or bust calculator via Google. Life changing!! M&S put me in a 34B. I'm a 30E.

beachwalkx · 10/08/2025 17:56

Yep I can fit myself

madaboutpurple · 10/08/2025 17:56

Since going to Bravissimo, I have found that the bras I have are far more comfortable. M&S are known as not being very accurate.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2025 17:57

M&S had me in a 40C when actually im 36GG. They often add inches to the back size giving a bra too big in the back and too small in the cup.

What dress size are you @BunnyLover7 ?
Im a 20/22 on the top and am in a 36 back. Are you plus size as 42 is a large under bust measurement?

Venalopolos · 10/08/2025 17:57

M&S only measure you for M&S bras in an outdated way. I’d suggested going to Bravissimo for a measure if there’s one near you.

Or measure yourself using boob or bust method

TheHandmaidsSnail · 10/08/2025 17:59

Nope. I have never ever had a comfortable bra. I have them in a variety of sizes and none are right. 36 D, 34D 36 DD etc

Notellinganyone · 10/08/2025 17:59

Yes because 28 years ago I went to Rigby and Pellet to be fitted. M snd S had sized me as 36 C - I was 28 E! Once you’ve worn a properly fitted bra you don’t look back. I’m 36 G now.

cotedazur28 · 10/08/2025 17:59

70% plus of women are wearing the wrong size because M&S is the worst place for fitting and they think it’s good.
Bravissimo fitting for me is the same as Boob or Bust so I’m quite happy with my bras.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2025 18:01

P.s. I measure myself to get a better idea of size

Measure tightly under bust to give the back measurement (without adding extra inches)

Measure around fullest part of bust (not too tightly) and then subtract the under bust measurement from the over bust measurement to get the cup size.

Each additional inch increases the cup size
1 inch - A
2 inches - B
3 inches- C , etc etc

Myblueclematis · 10/08/2025 18:01

I certainly was, wearing 38GG, professionally fitted and I'm now a 34G. Looks better, feels better too.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/08/2025 18:01

Being a true 42C means you have the somewhat unusual proportions of a very large chest/ ribcage and very little breast tissue only being a few inches more than your ribs...

M&S are an excellent way to end up in the wrong sized bra. They usually end up giving far too big a back size and under-sized cups with much of the breast tissue being accomodated in the band not the cup.

TiredAH · 10/08/2025 18:25

I got measured a size I’ve never had or tried before. Back was extremely tight. I keep telling the lady at Bravissimo that it was terribly uncomfortable.
She insisted I’d get used to it.
Left empty handed and never trusted a measure service again
I live in gym bras and old maternity ones😂

AnnaMagnani · 10/08/2025 18:39

Am sure somebody out there genuinely is a 42C but it does ring alarm bells for being the wrong size as it's a very unusual body shape of big chest, tiny boobs.

Boob or bust is generally a good starting point but nothing substitutes for trying them on.

I've also been had by a Bravissimo fitter telling me it would get more comfortable later- it very much did not. Despite this Bravissimo is always my go to. M&S is a guarantee of being given the wrong size.

Myblueclematis · 10/08/2025 18:48

I found the properly fitted bras really tight but they don't move about like the old ones I was wearing from M&S which gave me rashes under my boobs that itched like mad, the back was too high up. They were so uncomfortable, I had to keep undoing them or taking them off in the evening when at home. They were a nightmare.

The new ones are tighter, they don't move about, they sit properly across my back and the whole of my boob fits the cup, I no longer have rashes or itching and I don't have red imprints of the bra in my skin either. I can now wear a bra all day and evening without any problem.

DarkForces · 10/08/2025 19:06

I had brilliant experience in Bravissimo in London although they were short of stock after a warehouse fire. I got them to check dd and M&S had wrongly sized her so they did well that day. Sounds like I was lucky though

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 10/08/2025 19:09

M & S never measure right.

DelilahBucket · 10/08/2025 19:19

Yes I am, because I have measured myself using the Boob or Bust method. I was not however, after an M&S fitting where the band was halfway up my back with no support at all. All the support should be from the band, not the straps. It astounds me how many women insist they are in the correct size when clearly they are not. A 42C means you have 3 inches of breast tissue. A 42 back would generally equate to wearing size 28-30 clothes. It would be highly unlikely to have boobs of 3 inches and be wearing a size 28-30 in clothes. I say generally, it isn't a hard and fast rule, but your clothes size plus 10-14 is usually your back size in a bra.

DongDingBell · 10/08/2025 20:35

No. I've put on too much weight, and they are very, very snug.
I need to shift a couple of kgs, or go shopping. cba to do either right now!

amicisimma · 10/08/2025 20:47

Yes. I worked it out myself with plenty of trial and error. I expect to be able to forget I'm wearing one, except that I'm supported. I don't want any riding up, or discomfort or red marks on my skin. I don't want to be longing to take it off at the end of of the day.

I have quite a broad back and small boobs and I'm quite lean. I found Boob or Bust absolutely dreadful - it was a struggle to get the 'correct' size to meet round me, and going up one size left a red mark all round. It's hard to get a good fit as my perfect size is 36A, but I can make do with a 34B if it's got good adjustment. As I've seen people on here say I can't possibly be a 36A, I can see why they are hard to find in the shops. But I do exist and any other size is a compromise.

I notice a lot of people seem to have 'back boobs' under their arms and wonder it that's a result of too-tight band.

eurochick · 10/08/2025 20:51

The boob or bust method had me in a 32f. I bought one in that size and couldn’t wait to rip it off. It was so tight. I wear a 36 b or c and am much more comfortable. Some people would undoubtedly it is the “wrong” size but it is comfortable and supports my boobs so it is h the right size for me.

Instructions · 10/08/2025 20:52

Yes. And it would not be the size M&S would suggest 😂
