I’ve just received a FB ‘friend’ request from a Canadian cousin. I had never met him before he invited himself to stay over 10 years ago. He stayed 10 days, was taken all over London to see the sights, and barely ever put his hand in his pocket, even while on a requested a pub crawl with adult dd (a good 20 years his junior) - she eventually had to tell him ‘Your round this time!’

After he left, there was not so much as an email to say thanks, and there hasn’t been a word ever since.

Nasty cynic that I am, I suspect he’s angling after another freebie stay. TBH I don’t really use FB anyway, except for a closed craft group, but needless to say, I won’t be ‘friending’ him!

Eww - you'd be wise to be cautious x

Oh overseas distant/long lost/kids of relatives (and friends)can be the cheekiest of cfs. I had one about 10 years ago, friend's dd travelling around Europe. We took her everywhere, was my half term, never once even thought to buy a coffee or even a bunch of flowers when she left. Hardly spoke. Since then-not a peep.

I’d ignore.

We once had a family friend tell us their son was coming to London, could he stay for a few nights.

Stay he did, ate our food, drank our wine, let us buy him beers in the pub… never put his hand in his own pocket, and no thanks afterwards.

Very odd. I can’t tell if they know what they’re doing, or just haven’t been taught any social norms.
