Peter Kay show made me a little sad.

We went to see the wonderful Peter Kay last night. I have always loved his humour and yes it was very very funny in places.
However, I felt there was a real undertone of sadness in him. He lost his obviously beloved Nanna ans dedicates a part of the show to her. I felt after that the mood didn’t really lift. I know he had family in the audience. He also looked teary in various places.
I wanted to give him a hug. Maybe he was feeling emotional after being reunited with family. Has anyone else seen him recently?

True though. I'm the last leaf on the tree when my parents go. Be grateful if you have good family. some of us don't.

I'm sure he's very grateful. What makes you think he isn't? What you've said is totally irrelevant to this thread

AngelofIslington · 10/08/2025 17:47

@TaupeDeer but where do you stop, every single person has something in their life that someone else may want, saying someone should be grateful for having something you don’t is not that persons fault. As I said there is not one person in this world that doesn’t have something someone else would want.

sandwichsue · 10/08/2025 18:18

I agree with you @flapjackfairyi felt he looked soo different and that along with his discomfort or lack of spark meant it was like watching someone trying to fake Peter Kay. I love him and hope he looks after himself. But might be time to do some quiet writing etc.

My ex’s mum used to do his accounts, and believe me he’s not hard up. He never spends anything. Tighter than a drum.

I heard similar from someone in the know. At one event, he was contracted to receive a percentage of the venue’s parking charges. Unfortunately, the venue only owned a handful of the spaces; the rest were owned by another company. He wasn’t best pleased.

He’s lucky he has family, some people don’t.

🙄

For some season many people who lose a lot of their weight seem to lose their personality with it. They become aware of being attractive and about how they look, get a bit of ego and lose the humour. Definitely not everyone (my personality disappears when I get fat) but I have noticed it with some comedians and celebrities.

Pinepeak2434 · 10/08/2025 21:08

I remember seeing him live back in the early 00s and he was brilliant, but over the years I did feel he reused the same material too much. When I went to his show at the 02 in December I hardly laughed - he just didn’t seem himself, the spark was gone.

NightPuffins · 10/08/2025 21:29

I saw his show last year and barely managed a few laughs. So much of it just wasn’t funny, jokes that had been recycled, a bit out of date, some of it not even comedy (singing tv ad songs). I also thought he looked really unwell, not because of the weight loss but just like his spirit wasn’t there, his face was gaunt and grey.
Such a shame because I saw his show about 10 years ago (ish - can’t remember exactly) and it was one of the best nights of my life. I laughed non-stop from beginning to end, to the point I had aching muscles the next day!

Mamaneedsgin · 10/08/2025 21:30

I saw him in Glasgow earlier this year and was so disappointed, having seen him at his absolute peak in 2010.

The show felt dated, a little offensive in places and a rehash of very old material like the old TV ads that went on and on until it was getting awkward! I wanted to love it but it wasn’t very funny. It felt like comedy has moved on but Peter hasn’t.

I really hope he is ok and is back on much better form soon.

DurinsBane · 10/08/2025 21:32

I went last year, one of the best stand up shows I have ever seen. The finale was amazing!

FanofLeaves · 11/08/2025 09:41

It’s quite well known on ‘the circuit’ that he used to get a lot of his material from other, less well known comedians, or anecdotes and observations that aren’t his but he’s adopted to put his own spin on it- all within the realms of what most comedians do I’m sure, but since he’s been so reclusive for the last few years I imagine he’s not getting much refreshment in the material.

It's really strange you say that as I've heard that about so many comedians over the years. Last week Radio 4Extra had the comedy writer David Nobbs (writer of Reginald Perrin amongst others) and he confirmed that Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd and Les Dawson all had 'short arms and long pockets'. He said that Frankie Howerd was very generous however.

He also said that he thought you probably had to be completely self obsessed to be a really good comedian.

Thomsi · 10/11/2025 19:35

Anybody still waiting to see Peter Kay. Ignore a lot of the reviews. I have been to see him twice now and loved it both times. An emotional rollercoaster, Fun, sadness and overwhelming joy at the end.

sciaticafanatica · 10/11/2025 19:48

@Thomsiit was dreadful when I went to see him.
just not funny.
old gags rehashed.
slides of dead relatives and singing tv ads.
it was truly shite and unfunny!

SidekickSylvia · 10/11/2025 20:06

I'm going to see him in December (should have been October but it was postponed due to gallstones). Not sure I'd appreciate the slide show of his Nana, but I'm still looking forward to it.

Are you all not aware that hes dealing with cancer? I live in Sweden and i know, it baffles me that you dont!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 27/11/2025 15:55

I saw him at Blackpool Tower years ago and he was hilarious, so funny that my ribs were aching.

Went to see him a couple of years back at the O2 and left at the interval after not laughing at all.

So very sad.

He’s raising money for cancer charities but hasn’t said he has cancer.

Maybe he does, but there’s nothing confirmed.

He's never said he has cancer.

Dartmoorcheffy · 27/11/2025 16:08

He doesn't look at all well at the moment. Hopefully he is recovering from what caused him to retire from public life for that time.

The amount of speculation on here regarding why he seems so sad, losing his grandmother has been mentioned several times. I don’t think the poster was meaning people shouldn’t be sad, but if that was the reason (I don’t necessarily think it is) then it would be a disproportionate reaction under normal circumstance and I agree, which is why I think there’s more to it. Though none of our business, people will speculate and second guess

RachelFanshawe · 27/11/2025 17:03

If I went to a comedy show and ended up watching a slide show of a dead nan I'd want my money back 🙄

ILoveHotChocolates · 27/11/2025 17:07

It’s all a little over egged really isn’t it? Plenty of us lose grandparents. Doesn’t mean we can totally withdraw from life for years.

ConnieHeart · 27/11/2025 17:11

I saw him on the One Show yesterday & barely recognised him. He looked a little ill but I always think larger people who have lost lots of weight can look a bit gaunt, just cos im not really used to seeing them like that. He seemed fine though in himself, cracking jokes & seemed happy
