What do you wear to the gym?

After some ill health and enforced couch potatoing I want to start going to the gym, I can do things at my own pace and gradually work on cycling, walking/running etc.
I’m currently a size 18 apple shape, and all the gymwear I’m seeing is skintight (argh!) or cropped, unflattering leggings etc.

It’s going to be bad enough plucking up courage as it is, without all my insecurities enhanced!

So what does everyone wear? In particular ladies at the start of things and not yet where they want to be?

I wear size 18 bottoms and wear cropped leggings to gym classes. I am a 20/22 on the top and wear sports tshirts that cover my tummy and bum. Decent sports bra, a pair of trainers and a water bottle and you're sorted

I bought a big T-shirt in the exercise section in matalan, I’m going back to get some more.
i have the same issue, all crop tops.

I went to Tesco today and there were exercise leggings on sale lots of xl - which I think is about an 18 if any good.
im short so all the leggings are too long

I like matalan cropped leggings as I like airflow around my ankles. I have a few matalan tops too and some from the curvissa website

You're there to work out, it's not a fashion parade. Just wear tracksuit bottoms and a t shirt.

ZenNudist · 09/08/2025 23:41

Leggings and a loose top over a sports support crop top.

Baggier stuff is in. Get some wider leg pants. Admittedly you are meant to wear a small tight top then but a boxy shorter top would look good

mondaytosunday · 09/08/2025 23:50

Oversized t-shirt and leggings.

I’ve been going to the gym for a long time and Ive never seen anyone wearing trackie bottoms. Wear leggings and a tshirt if you’re more conscious of your weight. I wear leggings and a gym top or a fitted tshirt so I’m not constricted when I move. But I don’t dress like a teenager on Instagram. No one looks at me. Which I’m fine with. If you focus on your workout no one will likely look at you either.

The goodmove clothes at M&S are good and a decent price. I wear their leggings, they do different lengths, and a vest top under a short sleeved top. Good sports bra from Bravissimo as well!

I wear shorts and a T-shirt to the gym. I can’t wear anything tight on my body like leggings, it makes me feel suffocated. But no one has ever said anything to me. I don’t think anyone even looks!

I'm a 12- 14-16 (depending on the level of biscuit scoffing) and mostly swim for exercise but do use the rowers and walking treadmills sometimes.
I wear a loose fitting long vest top with knee lengths leggings in the gym.
Most of the over 40s women wear similar to me or baggy leggings and t-shirts.
I want to be comfortable when I'm exercising.
Enjoy your gym time

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2025 07:54

Yes absolutely recommend matalan.

Their t shirts are long and a good shape and their leggings are good too.

The y also so a bootleg legging if you feel tight isnt for you yet.

Their thinner sports jumpers are also a good length.

O also get sports wear from m and s good move and Tu at sainburys.

But most importantly no one will be judging you. You are going - that’s more than most people do. So find clothing that makes you feel good, hold your head up high and be proud of going. Flowers

I have quite a few men’s T-shirts I get for free at cybersecurity conventions so tend to wear one of them with a pair of leggings or shorts depending on how hot the day is. Nothing specialist except the bra, weight loss, age and size means I need something that holds them down and keeps them where they’re meant to be. M&S good move bras are good and they have one that can be adjusted at back, straps and along the sides so it’s lasted me through a few size changes.

Thanks everyone, I ‘know’ that nobody will really be looking, but it’s how I feel in myself that’s bothering me. You’re right, I think a good bra is key both for comfort and support/shaping. I have always been large of nork anyway, so any extra tonnage makes that extra obvious.
Really grateful for the recommendations, thankyou!

Intending to get my confidence back soon! Smile

I joined a gym a few months back. I usually wear the gym leggings and vest but have worn a baggy t-shirt a number of times.

There are people of various ages, sizes and levels of fitness at mine, so I've never felt self-conscious at all. In fact, I'd say it's mostly middle-aged mum and dad bods. The young gym bro types are too busy with their weight regimes to bother looking at us normies on the bikes and treadmills!

Pickingmyselfup · 10/08/2025 13:55

It depends how I'm feeling..

-Matching bra and trousers set
-Random leggings and bra
-Random leggings and some kind of top/bra
-Baggy tracksuit bottoms with some kind of top or bra

Happyher · 31/08/2025 15:35

Im like you leggings and T-shirt but there’s one girl who always looks nice. She wears long black leggings, a coloured gym bra (like a short cropped top) and then wears a long loose sleeveless vest over it.
