Who should get rid of left over waste from renovation?

We've had a friend in doing carpentry. We have loads of panelling and MDF left over which hasn't been used and it's now sat in our garden. There's also saw dust all over our neighbours driveway etc and he hasn't cleaned it up. He was going to charge us £200 to remove the left over waste. He's made around 8k out of us. Who gets rid of it us or him?

Well that depends, when he quoted for the job did the breakdown include removal of all waste?
if not and it was more of a casual mates rate arrangement, then I would expect it should be you.

youalright · 09/08/2025 16:38

Him if hes willing and you pay him to. This needs to be a discussion before any work is started

rwalker · 09/08/2025 16:38

Was it a mates rates job

what has he done for 8k

Well this friendship is circling the drain!

dairydebris · 09/08/2025 16:42

You pay, unless it was stipulated in the contract you both agreed on that he would.

IcyMint · 09/08/2025 16:44

What did the quote says?

We’ve recently had bathroom quotes and they all included removal of waste.

Was the 8K for just labour - in which case what have you had done? Or does it include materials?

KnickerlessParsons · 09/08/2025 16:44

It belongs to you, so you. He would have to pay to dispose of it, you won’t.

parietal · 09/08/2025 16:45

you pay someone to dispose of the waste unless disposal was in the contract at the start. If there is no contract, you sort it.

Glitchymn1 · 09/08/2025 16:46

Ultimately you.
Should’ve been discussed pre quote. You have no choice, as it’s your waste.

Megaclean · 09/08/2025 16:52

Whenever an OP is missing lots of relevant information, I always think… yep, you know you’re being unreasonable!

exhaustedandwholly · 09/08/2025 16:56

Not at all, he's also got saw dust all over our neighbours drive. It is absolutely covered in sawdust even their cars. He doesn't have a chopsaw with a hoover attached to it and faces the neighbours house. The waste we have now disposed ourselves but he was going to charge us £200 which I think is steep.

I would expect to dispose of it and clean. That is what skip hire was invented for.

Snorlaxo · 09/08/2025 17:02

How much rubbish was there? A medium sized skip costs £200 ime

Getting dust all over the neighbour’s car is pretty bad. I would offer to wash his car tbh for the sake of neighbourly relations.

The job might have cost 8k but that’s not the same as pocketing 8k which sounds like he made 8k profit. I assume that it’s a job that took days/weeks rather than hours so he deserves to be paid for his labour unless you have a drip feed about you or your h providing a similar number of hours free.

So you think this “friend” was trying to get one over you?

What a lovely close sounding friendship

He would have to pay a fair amount of that £200 to dispose of the waste as it would be classified as commercial waste if he takes it.
Disposal of domestic waste is free - you could have taken it to the tip yourselves.

as to the sawdust on neighbours property- it’ll blow away quite quickly.

TonTonMacoute · 09/08/2025 18:58

It depends what you have agreed with the contractor beforehand.

Our builders got rid of everything although I'm sure we paid for it somewhere in the bill.

20 minutes later, you cleared it all away and disposed of?

or is it the dust that you’re whinging about?

and he was going to charge you £200 to clear, dispose and get rid of the dust?
