How much is your weekly shop for a family of four?

Hi all,

I know this thread has probably been done to death, but I was wondering what your weekly 'big food shop' cost is?

I'm trying really hard to keep costs down as we've moved house and got two lots of nursery fees to pay for and it all feels a bit stressful. Our current spend is approx £120 per week with a few more quid in the week for another loaf of bread/milk.

That's for us 2 adults, a 4 and a 1 year old. Oh and a dog. Food costs just seem to be going up and up 🥲🥲

I think that's normal sadly. I spend roughly the same. We have cut back a bit having a pasta pesto meal one night and I bake a bit more. Only shop in lidl. But we do have steak and salmon but never get takeaway. So we aren't scrimping but not splashing out either.

IncaAztec · 09/08/2025 14:46

I would like to say £100 for 2 adults and 2 teens but realistically...£125-150

DeerOhDear · 09/08/2025 14:46

Yes around that with top ups about 40 too much .
I've tried to do batch booking etc

Mine are pre-teen I meant to say. I'm probably 140 a week (one eats what we do and youngest is a fussy Eater little appetite but bake wholemeal bread & eats that will eat raw chopped veg) but v much chicken nugget type eater

Food costs are just ridiculous it seems. We used to spend circa £100 a week and now I’m lucky to spend under £600 a month. Also two kids and dog (and cat) we do a jacket potato night once a week to try squash costs but it’s hard! I am wondering whether I’d be better shopping every few days instead of doing a ‘big shop’ where I possibly buy more than I need (though I have a food plan).

Namechangeforthis88 · 09/08/2025 14:49

Three adults (DS is 16), no pets, Lidl, always under £100.

Meat roughly once a week, fish roughly once a week. That helps, although it's more motivated by health and environment than money.

HansHolbein · 09/08/2025 14:50

About £120.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/08/2025 14:53

around £150 and then £80 for school lunches

A food plan sounds like a good idea, it's hard though as my toddler is extremely fussy which doesn't help. The 1 uear old will eat anything though, including mackerel pate 🤢
It all just seems a crazy price at the moment sadly.

That's a good spend. We do our shop in Aldi, I dread to think what the cost would be in Tesco, Sainsbury's etc...

£100 a week is our food budget. 2 adults, 2 children (6 and 3) and 1 dog.
I shop at Lidl and use the Lidl plus app to get the 10% off once a month. I meal plan. Where possible, I batch cook. Very rarely need a top up shop as I put milk and bread in the freezer.
This week's shop was £74, last week's shop was £68. Makes me so happy when my shop is under budget! 😂

okydokethen · 09/08/2025 15:10

£130 plus a few top up bits so really £150

rainbowstardrops · 09/08/2025 15:17

Four adults here and a cat but DS eats like a horse! Probably spend £150 - £200 a week if I added it all up. That’s not including any wine but we very rarely have takeaways or go out. I’ve definitely noticed my food bill increasing.

Why don't you do it as though you were going to do an online order at Tesco just to see? I find Tesco good value & find their fruit & veg lasts much longer.

Can't give you a family comparison as I now live alone.

Namechangeforthis88 · 09/08/2025 15:38

The more you make yourself the better. It can be trial and error to figure out what you can fling together after work that everyone likes.

Avoid posh fruit. It's apples, bananas and easy peelers.

DongDingBell · 09/08/2025 15:53

150-200, 2 adults, 2 teens. Includes all cleaning stuff, toiletries and a cat.

sandwichlover93 · 09/08/2025 16:25

£130 a fortnight for 4. Excluding cat food. It’s tough going but cook from scratch a lot and we don’t eat meat which may be cheaper?

I used to shop at Aldi but was sick of shitty fruit and veg. Now do Sainsbury’s online and it’s no more expensive overall.

Holdonforsummer · 09/08/2025 16:31

Honestly I’m embarrassed but I think mine might be pushing £170 a week now. Two adults, two teenagers, a cat and a dog. Two males are 6 foot plus and eat a lot, they want protein so I buy meat and fish. Shop in lidl. That includes packed lunches for the teenagers as well. The main Lidl shop is now about £130 the I top up in local Sainsburys a couple of times for fresh stuff/pet food.

MindBodySoul · 09/08/2025 16:35

Were a family of 4 and shop at Tesco

Between 100 and 120 a week including toiletries and cleaning

Also save up loads of points for Xmas shop which helps

FurForksSake · 09/08/2025 16:38

It varies, this week was £200 but that was quite a big Ocado shop with a lot of meat. I could do it for £120 from Ocado and probably £100 in Aldi. My kids are older and eat cereal likes it’s a competition.

Anna20MFG · 09/08/2025 16:43

£200 if we're lucky. Three boys who eat a huge amount and one is an athlete who needs extra protein. Currently use ocado, didn't find it went down much when I went to Aldi but will try Lidl now. Includes cat food.

FurForksSake · 09/08/2025 16:43

There are definitely ways you could stretch that budget, not doing the top up shops helps a lot. We get milk and bread from the milkman which is more expensive but no extras.

buying different meat, thinking about two meals out of one meal (make a big pot of bolognaise with lots of vegetables and bulked out with pulses, one night it’s spaghetti, the next you throw in tuna and cheese and pasta and turn it into pasta bake). Use more frozen veg, chicken legs and thighs, less meat based meals and more boring snacks. Really meal plan three meals and two snacks so that there are no surprises.

ThankYouNigel · 09/08/2025 16:45

£80 at ALDI.

Buildingthefuture · 09/08/2025 16:50

Probably around £140 a week just for two adults. That doesn’t include dog food, which is the same, if not more, again 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
We have zero waste, I batch cook and don’t buy ready meals. I do however buy meat from a really good butcher. It’s ££££ but so much better than the supermarket.
