For a beginner? Also had a bilateral mastectomy (5 years ago now) and need to strengthen my upper body in general. Any advice for a novice please?

I do bootcamp style classes, I started with a 6kg (single shoulder presses, up right row, back rows, swings, clean and press). I’m up to a 8kg-12kg 3 years later, depending on what move/repetition. Some very small/weak/young people use a 4kg. I’d say you need a couple, maybe 4&6 or 6&8. Could you use a PT for a couple of lessons to gauge your levels and teach your form?

how about an adjustable one? First, you want different weight for different exercises, and you will need heavier kettlebell when you get stronger. Mine goes from 16 to 22 kilos in 2 kilo increments.

I started with a 4kg about 6 months ago & now use 6kg. The class instructor lent me the 4kg one, so I haven’t had to buy 2. Good luck! Kettlebells is my favourite class.

I started at 12kg now on 16 to 32kg depending on the exercise.

Passthecake30 · 09/08/2025 13:59

@CowCat wow, what do you use the 32kg for? In awe, at my class the max is a 16kg that most people can just about do back rows with.

CowCat · 14/08/2025 16:33

@Passthecake30sumo squats and deadlifts. Admittedly I am not a beginner. I think 8kg/ 12kg is a good start beginner weight.

@CowCat ah that makes more sense than a shoulder press! Sumo squats and deadlifts I can manage higher.
