Aversion to coffee

In the past couple of years my body has really gone off coffee!

I was never a coffee fiend by any means but I did have probably 3 or 4 cappucinos or lattes a week and really enjoyed them. I have mostly WFH since Covid and so dropped down to 1 or 2 per week in recent years however gradually over the past year or 2 I find they upset my stomach (not quite diarrhea but loose (sorry TMI) bowels afterwards. I haven't had a cappucino or latte in many months and switched to Flat White which didn't have the same effect and I was enjoying 1 or 2 a week however today I had a flat white and I started to feel a little nauseous so just left it. It was like it suddenly hit me that I hated the taste!

Like so many things it could perhaps be age related (I'm mid-50s). No other appetite changes, no gain or loss in weight, no change in bowel habits or anything like that.

Just wondering if anyone else gradually found they could not tolerate coffee?

I can’t drink coffee anymore, if I have one I get shaky, sweaty, feel sick and have the worst headache. Never drank much of it but would enjoy the odd one occasionally. Avoid it completely now.

Are you sure it’s the coffee and not the milk?

Helpmeplease2025 · 08/08/2025 22:29

I never went back to coffee after pregnancy. It also gives me the shakes

I was always okay with coffee from my early teens (I’m early twenties), though tended to reduce intake during stressful times/when anxious. However, I had a bereavement in May, and ever since then I can’t stand the taste of coffee Hmm the time the bereavement happened would have been when I was drinking coffee before work, and that day I couldn’t finish it. And have struggled ever since to drink anything and the taste has been awful, unless one of the instant latte sachets (but even then, they’re sometimes hard to tolerateConfused). Nothing to do with milk, I’m absolutely fine drinking it plain/in cereal/milkshakes

Definitely. I drink glasses of milk every day for the calcium, I enjoy it and no nasty after effects.

@BillieEyelash1I'm very sorry to hear of your bereavement.

That is curious as I like those latte sachets too and they don't affect me at all.

How many coffee shots are in the drinks you are having? If it’s two, it’s possibly too much caffeine for you now. I always ask for one shot now.
Caffeine can have the effect of stimulating your bowel

Coconutter24 · 09/08/2025 08:18

I have only drank decaf coffee for the past 4 years because it had this effect on me

trainedopossum · 09/08/2025 08:50

I like it but about a year ago it suddenly started giving me a sore throat from the first mouthful so I avoid it now.

RandomMess · 09/08/2025 08:53

Switch to decaff if you are drinking “proper” coffee.

Wishimaywishimight · 09/08/2025 08:56

@PersephoneParlormaidI don't know tbh, I just ask for latte or whatever so maybe 2 is usual? I think I have gone completely off the taste though!

I’ve always been a coffee fiend, DH struggles with it depending on his stress levels. For him it’s not the caffeine as such, more because it’s acidic.

Don’t know how I managed to post that twice 🤦‍♀️

Wishimaywishimight · 09/08/2025 08:57

I've never tried decaf so could give that a try although I felt so queasy after yesterday I think I might stick to tea's in future!

@AdoraBellPerhaps that's the issue!

Yes, used to consume far too much of it, then after a particularly nasty bout of ‘flu in the mid-90s, I just couldn’t stand it anymore. Now even the smell makes me nauseous.
I don’t miss it anymore!

DressDilemma · 09/08/2025 09:03

I have always felt nauseous after drinking coffee. It also gives me stomach cramps and acidity. And instead of feeling alert, I feel dull and fatigued. I have never understood the love some people, including my husband, have for coffee.

MinnieCauldwell · 09/08/2025 09:14

In my mid 50s I started getting headaches and nausea. Only drink Lidl decaff now. Much cheaper

I love Lavazza decaf. Someone told me Illy is meant to be low in caffeine, maybe worth a try if you don’t like decaf.
