If you don’t work in an office

What do you do?

I’ve worked in various offices since I was 17 and I don’t think I can do it much longer. I cannot spend the rest of my working life in front of a screen for 8 hours a day, or sitting in pointless meetings or listening to wanky corporate speak. But I’m struggling to see a way out because it’s all I’ve ever known.

Swimming teacher the pool is my office and chlorine is my perfume

What qualifications do you have? If you have some business admin qualifications you could be a business admin Assessor for Apprenticeships in FE. Not great pay but I love working in FE and it would not be boring

autienotnaughty · 07/08/2025 21:32

I’m a library assistant. Low pay tho.

PeonyPatch · 07/08/2025 21:39

Can you retrain in something in the evenings or weekends? Cut your hours down?
I want to retrain in massage / holistic therapies

MyAcornWood · 07/08/2025 21:41

Own an agricultural contracting business. DH started it 12 years ago, just before I met him but I came on as a partner a couple of years in. I don’t drive much anymore since having kids, I generally do the paperwork. Possibly not overly helpful!

Nextdoormat · 07/08/2025 21:43

We have Apprenticeships for being a Librarian do you have any admin qualifications?
Easy to do an Assessor qualifications, and you are usually encouraged to work towards a teaching qual. Great if you fancy a change of direction. Training, mentoring, working in a college and visiting workplaces.

Court duty solicitor. I usually cover a range of courts in the mornings and in the office / wfh in the afternoons. Best of both worlds, some of my friends are conveyancing or corporate solicitors and spend their whole lives in front of a screen and have the same complaints as you.

sometimes you need to use the bandwidth to stick with what you know otherwise the alternative could be a pipedream, that you may need to circle back on.

I'm a cook. I've always been either a cook or been in a kitchen, or worked in/managed pubs.

The Business Admin Assessor suggestion is interesting. I quite like the idea of the job itself but the subject matter is still very much office adjacent.

I went from office jobs to teaching and don’t regret it. Every day is interesting and you get to see the impact of what you’re doing in real time. And hilarious things happen all the time! Things I do miss are: toilet breaks whenever you need them, chatting to colleagues about our lives (we’re always too busy to talk about anything other than work) and proper lunch breaks.

suki1964 · 07/08/2025 22:15

Im a cook now

Chef before ( what I do now can by no stretch of the imagination be called being a chef )

I started in retail, absolutely loved it. Then went into admin - which I hated and because it was NHS way back in the day, so poorly paid, its where I started working in kitchens/bars and restaurants and then ended up running a kitchen when I gave up on the NHS

Also did a few years doing market research as a field worker - loved that - pay was fantastic, hours to suit me

Tanefan · 07/08/2025 22:24

I’m a teacher but I really wouldn’t recommend swapping to teaching

MostlyGhostly · 07/08/2025 22:32

I know people who have moved on to dog grooming, postie, personal training, market stall trading, opened a packaging-free shop and gone into gardening. None of them regret it. Unfortunately DH has been made redundant so my plans to go self employed are on the back burner. Unfortunately it appears that I’ll be doomed to reaching out in terms of giving a starter for ten to deliver a one pager engaging stakeholders in delivery of the milestone key objective metrics by close of play on the 12th of never 👎🏼

I'm a beekeeper and I also make beeswax candles and other associated items.

Prior to that I was a chef.
Prior to that I was a Sports Massage therapist.
Prior to that I was a Civil servant.

I've also been a Special Constable.

I work in elderly care. I work in a care home now, but for many years I worked in visiting care.

It's a great job, and important. Wonderful people and many different responsibilities. It's health care, hygiene, haircare, social activities, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.
