Do homemade smoothies keep well in the fridge?

I am going through a lot of stress atm, I also suffer from some health issues and am wanting to eat better. I have adhd and when I am very stressed, as I currently am, I simply forget to eat. This is not great when you have IBS and functional dyspepsia.

I want to start making smoothies for breakfast and potentially lunch time too. The issue is that due to the way my brain functions and the fact I often have zero appetite I need something 'there and then' something I can see, grab and go. I know smoothies are super quick to make but I still won't make one even if it's easy to do, I need something that is there staring at me in the fridge, something to go.

I was thinking of making a large smoothie just before bedtime and popping it in the fridge ready for breakfast and lunch but not sure if it would be appetising after several hours sat there?

Has anyone made smoothies in advance? Are they ok?

In general, no. I find that they separate

That was my concern, I know I won't consume it if it looks iffy (I also have ARFID).

No not really but what about portioning the ingredients into individual portions in freezer bags that you see as soon as you open the fridge and also making sure the blender is clean and ready to go before bed so it’s just a case of grab the bag and chuck the contents in the blender?

I have tried that but just kept 'forgetting' to look in the freezer, kind of out of sight out of mind. I could ask DH to do it for me though, he's up at 5.30am.

Have you thought about overnight oats, if you are able to eat that of course. I can take food or leave it. I find the o.n oats very useful, as are yogurts, cheeses, and ready made sandwiches in the fridge or freezer.

Yes, they separate something awful. I suppose you could try whizzing them up in the blender again before drinking but I have never tried that so can't vouch for it.

I understand your need to have something nutritious 'ready to go'; when my chronic depression is bad, I'm the same. All the best with your health and everything.

Sadly I can't tolerate oats and I'm gluten and dairy free too (I know, I'm a pita!).

I find some smoothies separate but some just need a shake up in the bottle they're in. I'd sometimes make one first thing and shake it up for lunch. It depends on the ingredients. What do you like in a smoothie?

Also, could you buy these packets of smoothie mix or make your own for the freezer and at night just add a portion to the smoothie jug and put in the fridge. Have the blender part of the machine just above or beside the fridge. Then all you have to do is take the blender jug out the fridge, add liquid of your choice (which you also have portioned out in the fridge), pour it in and whizz. Fresher than blending it first but very few steps.

I sometimes add all the smoothie ingredients to the blender jug, add the lid and then put in the fridge ready to blend in the morning. I don't know if this would work for you

BertieBotts · 07/08/2025 14:55

They definitely separate but I find it ok if I shake them up again.

I make smoothies every other day. I use yoghurt, milk, strawberries, blueberries, banana, raspberries, blackberries (usually 2 fruits each smoothies. They never separate. I use the weight watchers blender. Have half one day and half the next. Keep in fridge.

As an alternative suggestion, Sometimes I make boxes of ‘pot noodles’
it requires 5mins of prep but it’s a meal every day for about 5 days.
I put some rice noodles in Tupperware, and a ton of veg, like spinach, spring onions, peppers, whatever I have, and some seasoning like soy sauce, rice vinegar, some spices, whatever. I try to also add some peanuts and edamame or other things that are more filling / proteiny
then when I want it I take it out the fridge and just add boiling water and stir. The noodles cook quickly and I have veggie ramen. Would that work?

I also keep good Greek yoghurt that I can just eat, cereal, vitamins tho I do forget to take them a lot, I buy smoothies which is a bit of a waste of money but not if I have some nutrition, I also try to pick one fruit to prep that I can eat bits of for a couple of days whilst I stand in the fridge, like a watermelon.
And I buy little blocks of cheese I think are designed for packed lunches so I can just grab one. And if I cook dinner I allllways do twice as much as needed so I have lunch or dinner the next day to reheat.
and I like to make pre prepared salad dishes like taboulah (sp?!) that I can just dip some chips in
I know all that won’t work for everyone though but I know once I get to the point of remembering I need to eat it’s too late to prepare food, so these are some things that help me
