Vinted mix up, AIBU to ask for this item to be free (temporarily)

LargelyBusiness · 07/08/2025 08:13

Seller has mixed up her items and sent them to the wrong buyers.
She has requested I return the item, once it arrives, at my expense.

However, the parcel hasn't arrived and I'm going on holiday today. The item needs returning within five days and I’m not here to do that. If it isn't returned my money will be released to her.

Seller has the option to offer that I keep the item without paying for it.

As this is the sellers mistake is it unreasonable, to ask that I keep the item and she refunds me. When I get back from my holiday, I will return it to her at that point.

My thinking is even if I mark this as having an issue this sale is going to complete within the set five days, meaning I'm going to pay for an item I neither ordered or want. ( and haven't seen, don't know the size, etc ).

A a seller there is no way I would agree to this. They don't know you are an honest person who will resolve this.

HarrietBond · 07/08/2025 09:07

I don’t understand why she is asking you to pay the postage for a refund in the first place? It’s her error, she should be paying for that. It’s also not your fault you’re going on holiday.

Can you refuse delivery or leave the package at its collection point? Then it just goes back to the sender anyway.

Grumplechops · 07/08/2025 09:07

If you don’t pick up the item then it should be returned to her anyway. I don’t think you’d be charged as you haven’t received the item.

OneInEight · 07/08/2025 09:31

It was the sellers mistake. They sent the wrong item so there is no way you should be charged for it. If they want you to return it they should pay the postage not you. The way I run my ebay business is if I make a mistake I am the one who pays to sort it out and the customer(s) get the apology they deserve.

She's going on holiday. How can she refuse delivery if she isn't at home?

@LargelyBusiness I'd mark it down as having an issue as soon as you get a notification that it's arrived. Pretty sure that buys you extra time to sort it out. How long are you on holiday for?

AzurePanda · 07/08/2025 09:53

This is what I really don’t like about Vinted. Its process is far too inflexible.

Brenda34 · 07/08/2025 09:55

Raising an issue does give you extra time.
Is it being sent to a collection point or to your house?
She should pay for return postage if it's her error. CF behaviour to think that you should be out of pocket for her mistake.

So I can raise an issue and then I have 5 days to pay for and return the package, otherwise she is paid.

So, I am going to end up with an item I have bought, which isn't the one I wanted, didn't choice and quite likely doesn't fit.

If I'd missed the correct parcel arriving because I am on holiday I would have taken the chance that all was ok and agreed the release of the payment because I had picked the item, knew it was the clothing I needed and checked the size.

Three weeks! Parcel to be delivered to home.

YABU. Don't buy stuff from Vinted if you are not going to be there to receive it. Yes she's made a mistake but she's not Amazon. Vinted is good because people treat others as just other individuals trying to pass stuff on for a bit of cash.

Is there no one who can deal with the parcel while you are away?

AzurePanda · 07/08/2025 10:49

@AlphaApple given a Vinted parcel can take anything from 2 days to over 2 weeks to arrive, it’s pretty hard to always guarantee you won’t be away for 48 hours when it arrives.

And @AlphaApple

Yes, I have taken the chance on the parcel not arriving in time. It was showing with the courier as ready to be delivered two days ago and hasn't arrived. If I had missed the parcel, as I said above, I would have marked it as ok, and taken the chance on it being in a new condition. After all I chose the item I wanted.

As the seller hasn't sent my item but something completely different it is extremely unlikely that I would be keeping it. Yet I am going to be left with an item I have paid for which due to the sellers mistake, I don't want.

If it does arrive today, I also have to pay to return it to her…because she has made a mistake.

I'm looking for a fair outcome, but that has to be for me too, not just the seller.

When this happened to me I raised an issue then the seller generated a return postage label. No way should you have to pay anything for their mistake.

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/08/2025 11:53

The seller can choose to pay for the return. She absolutely should in this case. If she’s not willing, she’s absolutely taking the piss.

NancyBellaDonna · 07/08/2025 12:17

can you cancel the order?

UPDATE
I see it's been sent so you can't cancel.
Sorry. Take no notice of me.

AlphaApple · 07/08/2025 12:29

I do appreciate you can't predict when a parcel arrives but it's a chance you take. Is there really no one you can ask to return the parcel for you? The seller made a mistake, we're all human, and she's asking for a bit of give and take.

I do agree that the seller should pay for the postage return.

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 07/08/2025 12:40

Op see if it gives you the option to divert the delivery to a parcel shop, if it does do that and then when you don't collect it it will be returned to the sender without you having to pay.

stopringingme · 07/08/2025 12:56

@LargelyBusiness

Can you get onto the tracking and put that you want it delivered to a parcelshop, it will stay at the parcelshop for about 10 days and then be returned to the seller and you should then be refunded - depends on which courier though.

You don't raise an issue usually until you have the item in front of you to take photos.

The seller can pay for the return when you raise the issue, they should not expect you to pay for their mistake.

I was thinking if it arrived before she left today! Otherwise obviously not.

LargelyBusiness · 07/08/2025 21:01

So, still trying to sort this before I leave.

It was too late to make any changes to the delivery so now I have the parcel.

Yep! Not what I ordered and definitely not what I would have chosen!

I have reported that I have an issue.

Seller and I have had a ‘conversation’ but she is stalling in agreeing the return and unwilling to confirm that she will pay the postage.

Have you said to the seller if they do not do anything and it completes you will have no option but to leave negative feedback - a lot of sellers seem to be scared to get negative feedback.

If it was a cheap item I might be tempted to keep it, complete the transaction and leave negative feedback anyway.

Do you think the other buyer has decided to keep the other item and has completed the transaction so therefore the seller thinks you should keep the wrong item as they will be out of pocket otherwise if they pay for the return postage.

I would just leave it as an issue raised and if the seller does nothing it will be passed to vinted to decide, I think after 21days, but if the seller knows you are going away they may be hanging on till you are away then they will request the return and as you only have 5 days to start the return it will complete and they get their money.

Do you have anyone who can be on standby to send it for you whilst you are away if you send them the qr code or details, not that you should have to do this as the seller should act in good faith and put right their mistake.

Put your vinted account on holiday mode (if you are not already away) and they may think you have gone away earler and then act.
