Cash or card on holiday?

Off to Malta with the dc in a few weeks. I've always picked up a wad of euros from the post office before leaving for holidays but think it may be time to come out of the dark ages. What do other people do? I imagine I'll need some cash, would a few hundred euros in cash work then the rest in a Monzo account? Its our first time going to a hotel as all other holidays have been staying with friends/family so always had a safe place to leave the majority of cash.

We always take a small amount of (local) cash, but then use a Halifax Clarity card to pay for everything else.

I never take any cash now, I have a few euros that I drag out every time. If you have a card that you can use without charges use that - just remember to pay in euros when they ask. I get cash out if a cashpoint if I need it but mostly I use my card. You do need one designed for free overseas use though.

I take a small amount of cash no more then 200 euros and then use bank card .

Around 50-100 in cash, card for everything else. Cash is sometimes needed for the bus, the loo, some cafes, and the local markets etc. Well that's what I do anyway!

Thanks, Monzo is free to use I believe. We went to Greece a few years ago and everywhere wanted cash! Shopkeepers even offered discounts for cash.

I’ve been to both Greece and turkey this year , monzo card for restaurants , trips & bigger supermarket purchases .
Took around £300 in small note denominations for tips &
small shops , worked well. Also took English money to Turkey as they seem to prefer that when buying clothes & paying for excursions . I’ve never been to Malta so can’t comment on there .

I took a small amount of cash out when I went to Malta but most places take cards.
Having read the post the other night about currency stolen from a locked hotel room safe, I’d caution against large amounts. Especially if your travel insurance has a cash limit.
Malta is beautiful, have a great time.

I take about 150: euros in cash and use my chase debit card for everything else.

Haven't been to Malta but for most European countries I'd take some currency and a card (I have Revolut, it has both sterling and Euro accounts on it). We'd get asked "Cash or card?" when paying a bill and sometimes we'd say "What would you prefer?" Most places were happy with card payments but some would specify cash, so it's handy to have.

We've just been to Greece and the vast majority expected card payment, which we find usual (we go most years). Hope you have a great holiday.
