What colours would you decorate this living room?

My living room colour feels like a prison cell colour. (don't come at me for my ceilings, I love them).

What colour scheme do you think would work in here and are there any decoration bits anyone can recommend to make it cosier?

Sorry I don't have any suggestions on colour but your Livingroom is absolutely gorgeous! I love your ceiling and the spot lights are a lovely touch. I think white is good as it keeps it bright and open, could you maybe add some photos or something to make it feel more personalised and homely to you?

AnchorWHAT · 06/08/2025 11:54

I would certainly add some colour with bright cushions and throws, possibly curtains too to make it feel cosier. The ceiling is a bit dark to me so if i lived there i would paint it white but if you love it keep it. I would also add a floor lamp by the sofa and get some books and / or ornaments on the empty shelves, and a cushion on the seat thing in the alcove, maybe also a small side table by the chair with a lamp on.

It's hard to judge from those photos -- which direction do those windows face?

I think your issue is that the floor and ceiling are very different colours and different vibes. Depending on the aspect, I'dhave considered going for quite a deep colour on the walls, but that's not going to work with a white tiled floor.

Some baskets under the alcove seat for storage would make it less bare and fairy lights in there, not everyones cup of tea but I adore my lights that i have draped round my big plants. 😃

AnchorWHAT · 06/08/2025 11:57

and finally to answer your actual question I would keep the walls neutral, maybe a deep rich cream.

Yes agree that pictures photos or art would add a nice feel.

Colour of walls is fine, you just play up the 60s/70s vibe with an orange print and orange cushions/rug.
the Orla Keily stem orange print would look fab

MaryGreenhill · 06/08/2025 12:13

Paint the ceiling white and have leafy green wallpaper on one wall and green accessories .

LoveMyLifeAlways · 06/08/2025 12:14

Creamier colours that tone with the ceiling.

That could definitely work, and wouldn't involve altering the floor or painting the ceiling.

MyMilchick · 06/08/2025 12:15

a light green

caringcarer · 06/08/2025 12:17

Timeless on walls but add colour through accessories. Choose a strong bright colour like orange or hot pink and add a rug, cushions, a lamp and wall art. Bright accessories would transform the space and they won't cost too much.

Complet · 06/08/2025 12:17

I don’t think it’s the colour that makes it feel oppressive, it’s more the heavy ceiling and corporate spotlights and blinds.

I would use side lighting instead of the harsh spotlights, change the blinds to fabric, and a large rug to soften.

LoveMyLifeAlways · 06/08/2025 12:18

I'm afraid I think the walls and floor need to be changed - they don't work with the ceiling

IngenTing · 06/08/2025 12:19

I'd embrace the naturals of the wood, give it a Nordic forest cabin feel. Deep sage walls, swap the rug for a larger deeper pile of a more natural brown/ forest green. Some lambswool throws on the sofas and some burnt amber cushions etc.

Just a personal opinion, but I love the ceiling, hate the floor. If you could change the floor to something more natural, it would be stunning.

waitingforpost · 06/08/2025 12:23

The floor and the ceiling don't work imo. If you like the ceiling then going dark would work but that would clash with the floor.

Wexone · 06/08/2025 12:24

My in laws have that type of ceiling and like you say made feel like was in a prison, i know others are saying keep it but honesty they painted it an off white colour and the difference it made was unreal, room fell so much brighter and you didn't feel so hemmed in. Then a big cosy rug on the floor and some nice cushions, some nice art or prints on the wall

waitingforpost · 06/08/2025 12:24

but i'm not sure it's the colour of the walls that makes it feel like a cell.

I think it's the sharp contrast between the ceiling and the walls as well as the colours of the walls and floors.

I think it needs to be softened with colours that tone with the ceiling.

Adding loads of 'things' still just make it feel cluttered and will still not seem right

WilfredsPies · 06/08/2025 12:29

I like your ceiling. I think it suits the room perfectly. I’d stick with a colour scheme not dissimilar to what you already have. It’s a really lovely room. But I’d move the furniture around. And use one of those design apps to see what it would look like if you took that stair wall down. And make that alcove under the stairs more comfortable, so someone would choose to sit in it. And more plants!

NightPuffins · 06/08/2025 12:29

I would use a pale green/gold colour combination, add more plants, cushions, and some pictures on the wall.
That cupboard under the stairs with the little nook seat - I would remove that whole built-in cupboard and instead dedicate that wall space to book/display shelving.

IngenTing · 06/08/2025 12:30

I forgot to add, if you can get a much larger rug that fits underneath the sofa too. I think it would help the room feel more put together and less corporate like @Complet said.

Eddielizzard · 06/08/2025 12:33

I would embrace the 70's vibe, paint most or all of the walls white and one wall a deep orange. That would tie in the ceiling. Larger rug. Someone suggested Orla Kiely fabrics, and I would go with that.
