My whole face HURTS

Well, not all of it but the whole right side.

Started off a week ago now with a bit of TMJ pain (jaw joint pain) that I've had before but it quickly escalated into breathe through type waves of pain radiating up and down my upper and lower jaw. Between the waves it was just the dull ache at the joint. Over the weekend it progressed into a ear ache as well. Yesterday I started getting front tooth pain along with pain around my sinuses (prone to sensative teeth if sinuses are playing up). I've woken up today with the whole right side of my face feeling stuffy like a cold, a horrible taste in my mouth, a very dry and achy throat, sinus pain all along my cheek from nose to mid face, a sinus headache and temple headache, blocked very sore ear and still these waves of pain from my jaw.

I've been taking Ibruprofen and paracetamol regularly, and using tropical pain creams on my jaw and it's all now barely touching the pain - it takes it away to a "manageable" pain level at best.

I've been to the dentist - nothing apparently wrong there just keep using my mouth guard at night for know TMJ / clenching issues.

I finially fell asleep and slept past the 8am rush GP appointment rush so can't see one today.

I'm so so tired having not slept through the night for a week and being in complete, life stopping agony for 70% of the week and in pain for the remaining 30%. I've just hit my limit today and feel miserable so I'm desperately reaching out for ideas on what it could be and any suggestions for pain management? I'll literally try anything right now. I need a break. I need sleep and rest.

I will be phoning GP in morning tomorrow. I dont feel like it's A&E worthy ie not an emergency plus have no child care.

Oh and the jaw pain started after a jaw injury that resulted in a chipped tooth on the other side of my mouth so not sure if it's connected but regardless dentist has ruled out dental issues other than clenching..

Yeah I think it's because it affects the nerve in your face. It's the absolute pits. Hope you feel better soon

Sounds awful. Are you sure your GP still does the 8am scramble? I thought they'd rolled out the new system everywhere now, worth checking if you haven't been for a while.

Even if you miss the 8am rush, it's still worth trying. This time of year can often be quieter with lots of people away so you never know your luck.

Yes, they do the mad rush and then, if your lucky to get thro, get given a call back appointment to speak with GP who will give you a actual appointment if them deem it appropriate 🫨 it's a nightmare. Puts me off even trying if I'm not able to call exactly at 8am. (which I missed again.)

This was basically what I had. Cocodamol helped shift it. Gave some respite from the pain.

Definitely sounds very much like sinusitis. I get flare ups every so often.

Update : went back to dentist - seen a different person. Turns out the previous person didn't xray far enough back so completely missed a impacted, infected wisdom tooth that had its root very close to my jaw bone. It had been left that long it had caused damage to other tooth as well. Wisdom tooth removed that day and pain instantly gone!

Went back last week to have more work done on broken tooth from a injury and a filling. Seen the first dentist (who missed the wisdom tooth) Wasn't in any pain beforehand but now in almost agony again with soft palate pain, sinus pain, sensative teeth and facial bruising. So I'm back at the painkillers until I can get back to find out what has happened but I think I can safely say I will be moving dentists!

Phew glad you found the cause. Good luck with the recovery. Facial pain can be really complex to find the source of.

OnNaturesCourse · 07/09/2025 09:20

It can be! I feel like I've been at it for months now, and now have a new problem to figure out. Having the wisdom tooth xrayed at the first visit would have eliminated a lot of time in pain though! Very disappointed it was missed. It's made me doubt my current dentist a lot!.

You could try pseudoephedrine as long as youbdont have high blood pressure or heart problems. I would if the pain worsens when lowering your head i.e. sit down put your head between your knees. If it worsens likely sinus.

I have tried nasal sprays. Not making a difference unfortunately. But thank you.
