Is anyone else’s predictive text out of control?

Is anyone else’s predictive text out of control? I swear my phone is trying to send me round the bend these past few weeks; it seems to try to suggest words in text that I write and if I’m not on the ball it puts them into the text or only half writes a word I am trying to overwrite it with. If this post makes it out alive with no errors it will be a miracle! WhatsApp seems to be the worst offender. Apple phone. Anyone else?

Mine goes a step further and actually changes the words I have typed into something else, without highlighting that it's done so!

Yep, this. Half the stuff I post is garbage as it changes it to garbled shite which I only notice once it’s posted so majority of my posts are edited for that reason.

you is now Tou
can is now Cant
etc. With capitals. Where did the capitals in the middle of a sentence even come from? Just terrible. It even corrects correctly spelled words to some non-word. WTAF 😱

Oh yes, mine keeps putting Internet with a capital I. Makes me look like I am about 100 years old, struggling with this new-fangled online stuff 😁

Same here, just awful. Autocorrecting the most mundane things into highly unlikely choices. My writing used to be immaculate, now half the time it looks like I’m an idiot.

The one on my word processor is the worst, treating short words as prompts which it then fills in itself with no warning, seemingly on the basis of a misremembered version of something I wrote six months ago, but with no consistency and no ability to override. I’ll be trying to write ‘Do Re Mi …’ and will end up with a list like:

Dont
RecompenseReceipt
My
Fabtraption
So
LA
Tijuana
DoubleJanetIrefertoyourearlier

Assuming this is AI’s doing, I die inside dealing with colleagues who enthusiastically embrace its new iterations like prompted responses (‘can you cc this to someone in accounts please’ “Sounds good!”)

Yes, happens so much lately! It corrected the perfectly normal word 'some' to 'dork' the other day - I presume I had typed 'soem' instead, and it decided one of those was more likely than the other.. hmm

But Ii don't want to turn it off either, as it's really useful on the small keyboard where I do hit the wrong keys a lot to have single letters corrected - as long as it's obvious that it's changing them, and does it right away, that's good. So I wish there were more refiined settings that would allow you to choose how much interference you want!

EmeraldRoulette · 06/08/2025 10:03

@TakeMeToAnIgloo there are more refined settings which will amend the extent to which it will go but it may take you a while to find them

But when I had to switch it off for the second time, it was making the most insane suggestions. I presume it's the same principle as Grok - which they initially modelled on a teenage boy I think. Hence why it will change "work" to "dork".

Honestly, just switch it off. It's the easiest option of all.

I could never understand why when I typed mum it corrected it to nun , I mean how ? mum must be typed by millions of people millions of times a day but unless I’m writing about call the midwife or sister Boniface mysteries Nun, not so much.

PrincessFluffyPants · 06/08/2025 10:19

I've just gone into my settings in my iPhone and reconfigured the predictive text settings, I've still kept spell check on in case I hit the wrong key whilst typing so it will highlight it.

It has felt strange typing this out without any prompts, only one fat finger spelling mistake was highlighted and there are no missing words that I know very well I had typed out and have now disappeared! So calming to type something knowing it's going to be exactly as you wrote it and no longer giving the impression it has* been written by a drunk.

*fat finger mistake I wrote gas instead of has, but at least that was MY mistake and not weirdo AI correcting me.

Mine is doing this, changing words I have typed & suggesting wrong spellings?

Yeah, you need to fiddle with the predictive text settings

They basically have one now that says "I will tell you what to type and it will have no relation whatsoever to what you wanted to say".

NoWordForFluffy · 06/08/2025 20:43

Mine has gone to shit recently. Other than that it's finally learned to swear. So that's not a bad thing!
