Are you disappointed if it turns out to be-

a. The actor
or
b. The scientist

Complete indifference either way.

Dearg · 05/08/2025 08:07

A. Massive wind bag with absolutely nothing of interest to say.

Not crazy about the Prof either, but at least what he has to say has relevance.

I would have been very disappointed if B had walked out on stage last night that is for sure, as A, along with the rest of the fabulously talented cast, delivered an absolutely knockout performance. Best play I've seen in ages.

🤣🤣🤣But you wouldn’t want A messing around with radioactive isotopes…..

So disappointed if its A
smug, righteous and feels the need to let us know his opinions.
he just plays pretend.

I think the scientist is brilliant.

This. The actor is such a bore.

Skissors · 05/08/2025 08:16

They're both worth a listen albeit not all day.

DD has a dislike of B. Refused to apply to Manchester uni to do physics as he works there.

Screenager · 05/08/2025 08:19

The actor

Ohthatsmeback · 05/08/2025 08:20

I always think it's interesting to have two people with the same name so outstanding in their individual fields.

When I do quizzes with my son I often end up looking up people on Wikki when we are going through the answers. Reading the lists of notable people with the same names and looking them up is something we both enjoy doing.

To answer OP 's question I admire the actor so would would want to watch him. I know less about the scientist so would be interested to see him and find out more. So neither would be a disappointment really.

lljkk · 05/08/2025 10:44

I don't know the actor (ok I did like him in Succession but not hugely) and the scientist irritates me often. The podcast topic matters more than the guest, surely? Even the scientist can amuse me, sometimes.

Basically wouldn't immediately turn off for either.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 05/08/2025 11:18

I can forgive the actor pretty much anything because of the wonderful “McLevy”, one of my favourite radio dramas. The scientist, as others on the thread have said, is annoyingly smug and deserves to be slapped with a wet fish for helping to inflict the God-awful “Things Can Only Get Better” on the world.

MrsEmmelinePankhurst · 05/08/2025 11:21

I can’t STAND the scientist. Horrible Histories did a brilliant send-up of his faux-enthusiastic over-emoting, it was brilliant.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2025 11:35

It would depend entirely on the subject of the podcast, obviously.
It would be not so much disappointing as enormously baffling for BC the scientist to contribute to anything to do with acting or the theatre, and even moreso for BC the actor to be in a podcast about science.

TakefivedeepBreaths · 05/08/2025 11:50

Love the scientist and watch most things he's done. Never heard of the actor.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/08/2025 11:59

I'm astounded that people have never heard of Brian Cox the actor. He is brilliant. We absolutely loved the comedy series he did for the BBC a few years ago - Bob Servant. Also excellent in one of the Bourne films. Missed Succession, must catch up with it!

VisitationRights · 05/08/2025 12:04

I would be disappointed if the actor was giving the talk but would prefer to see him in a play!

I would be disappointed if the scientist was appearing with his annoying little side kick Robin Ince, I’m not paying to listen to tgat one pontificate.

Yeah, I nearly mentioned Ince as a demerit. Maybe Ince would be preferable to either Cox in some types of comedy show.Confused

I love Brian Cox the scientist because he explains difficult things in ways that I understand. And because, until he was apparantly told not to by his wife, used to call people knobbers on Twitter. And they were always people I thought were knobbers too. And because he is an outspoken and well informed atheist-and we need more of them. And I don’t think he is actually smug-I think his voice makes him sound a bit smug. What he says isn’t at all.

Obviously I love the actor too for all the reasons that have been stated. But there are a lot of actors. Not many scientists who can explain things to me.

OP posts:
ladygindiva · 05/08/2025 23:18

Neither. The actor reminds me of my dad so I like him, and I have a secret crush on the scientist 😁

Gardeninging · 05/08/2025 23:25

I wouldn't be disappointed in either, but I'd much prefer listening to the D-Ream keyboard geek and scientist about everything and anything.
Actors are a dull breed.

Cinaferna · 05/08/2025 23:29

I can't see Brian Cox the scientist without thinking of Philomena Cunk and Barry Shitpeas' review of Wonders of Life

"The chicken is radiating disorder out into the wider universe"

Tiredofwhataboutery · 06/08/2025 12:47

I really like Brian Cox (the scientist) he makes me want to understand the universe. I do like the actor too (fellow Scot) so quite keen on either tbh.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/08/2025 12:53

The actor would disappoint me. Love a bit of the Prof, whereas I'm still not sure I can pick the other one out of a line up.

BlueBulgari · 06/08/2025 21:58

I like both. Neither would disappoint me.

CrawlingFromShitshowToAfterglow · 06/08/2025 22:18

Not a huge fan of either. But, for some reason, I always confuse Brian Cox with Brian Glover. No idea why.
