Pea and ham soup help

I feel like an idiot even asking. I want to make pea and ham soup have never made it before my nan used to make it and get a ham hock bone fron the butchers. My partner said his mum uses ham shank when she makes it but I've seen recipes online where people just buy sliced ham. What do you use? Thanks

Gammon joint leftovers usually. Love pea and ham soup.

do not use the stock from the meat it will be waaaaaaaaay too salty. Freeze that down into stock cubes.

I've recently discovered that Sainsbury's sell flaked ham hock, in the same range as packaged ham. I don't know how widely available it is - I saw it in a superstore. And it's not a large quantity.

I use off cuts from a joint, you can get them in tesco etc. Sliced ham isn't really flavourful enough but would do if you used a lot of it I guess.

Don’t do it in a pressure cooker. My ex did - and when it blew off the weights, it sprayed the ceiling with superheated pea soup sludge, which dried instantly to vomit coloured pebbledash and set like concrete.

Ha. That reminds me of the time my cat managed to knock a pot of spinach and potato soup off the side where it was cooling. Removing it from the ceiling was not fun. It went everywhere. Except, oddly, on the cat, who escaped entirely uncovered in green.

Aldi do a pack of ham off cuts - really thick slices £2.49. You have to watch out because some are from the herby flavoured joints.

I buy a Sainsbury's own small gammon joint (unsmoked) as it's a reasonable price and I like plenty of meat in my soup so it makes a hearty meal. If you have a local butcher or your supermarket has a meat counter you could always ask if they have some ham off cuts and a ham bone, this would work well as the bone would give a lovely flavour.

I cook mine in my instant pot (electric pressure cooker). I soften onion and celery in olive oil or butter, usually add a couple of carrots, then I add (washed) dried green split peas, low salt veggie or chicken cube and black pepper, but no salt - this can be added at the end if needed, but it often isn't as gammon is already quite salty. Lots of recipes say add bay leaves, but I rarely have any so I might add some dried thyme, but it's down to personal preference. I cook on high pressure for 20 minutes, let it cool, then blitz it with an immersion blender, or in my liquidiser.

You don't need a pressure cooker, you can cook on the stove top, obviously it will just take longer, usually 60-90 minutes. I have also seen recipes online that cook pea and ham soup in a slow cooker. Just try whatever works for you.

Pea and ham soup is my favourite, good luck Op.

@BreathmillerScottish, I presume? When I lived in London, I used to say that to my workmate when she had pea and ham soup for lunch - I eventually shared the ad with her. A classic!

You can use cooking bacon, that’s by far the cheapest way to do it. I also use carrots, celery and onion. Red lentils, yellow split peas, and dried marrowfat Bigga peas. Bloody beautiful and it freezes a treat.

LardoBurrows · 04/08/2025 13:36

That works out expensive per kilo and the ham has already been cooked so it will not be as flavourful as uncooked ham (gammon).

The Tesco Unsmoked Gammon Joint 750G at £5.15 is a much better choice, the meat will have more flavour and it only works out at £0.69p per 100g compared to £2.25 per 100g.

If you cook the whole joint you can make a large batch of soup and freeze it into smaller portions.

Oh yes, that's where I saw the slow cooker version. I agree that is a really good site for recipes.

Jesswebster01 · 04/08/2025 13:50

I think I will use the recipe link you have given doing it in the slow cooker and get a gammon joint. Thanks all wish ne luck 🤣

Good luck! Top tip for freezing leftovers, pour a bowlful into a tie handle sandwich bag sat in the bottom of a takeaway box/ tupperware and knot. When it's frozen you can remove the box and have stackable soup blocks which save space.
Label......

We have 8 of different flavours at the moment....
