Fed up of feeling crap all the time?

Ok so in my 40's on HRT but seriously have been feeling like this since my early 30's but it is getting worse. I've always had migraines since my childhood but they have got worse and more frequent throughout my life. I am under the care of a neurologist for these and have medication and have tried them all my migraine is highly refractory. However it isn't just that its everything. Like even if I don't have a headache I've slept badly and so feel tired and exhausted. If I've slept ok, don't have a headache then I have stomach pain that lasts for hours or I have neck and shoulder pain, or my knees are sore, or I come down with a bad cold. A few weeks ago I woke up, I'd slept well, no migraine, no stomach issues or other pain. I was so excited to have a good day on a day when I was off work and could catch up on my to do list. I ate breakfast, wrote a list stood up and my back went out and was out for a week.

I could go on but my point is that I never feel completely well. I try to do all the right things I eat well, cook from scratch, I don't drink or smoke, I exercise, have a good sleep schedule, I stay hydrated, eat to balance my blood sugar levels and yet I still feel like shit almost all the time in one way or another. Looking back I've never had great vitality but it probably is getting worse as I get older and it's just depressing to always have pain or discomfort or exhaustion and I just wondered if anyone else could relate?

Try fasting ☺️

wipebored · 04/08/2025 12:13

@Nannoonanoo I have it makes my migraine much worse, was told by my neurologist to stop trying to do it. I have tried various things that make one thing better but the other things worse like magnesium glycinate made my migraines better but sleep much worse. Various medications have improved my migraines but made my joint pain worse. Its so frustrating!

This is similar to me, I basically have to ignore how off I feel or I wouldn’t get out of bed. I have possible endometriosis (waiting for key hole to confirm), I have back and shoulder pain, leg pain, headaches, fatigue etc some days are better than others. I take vitamins, look after my gut health, eat well etc but not much really helps. I’d love to feel ‘normal’ again. I’m 45, do wonder if some of it is peri related. Doctor not at all interested and looks at me like I’m mad if I try to explain how unwell I actually feel.

Have you had blood tests to check iron, vitamin d etc?

wipebored · 04/08/2025 12:18

@REDB99 Yeah I am the same I just have ignore how I feel and get on with it but I never feel well in myself ever and haven't for the best part of two decades now. I wondered if I have some form of Dysautonomia. Similar to you most doctors aren't interested. My Neurologist is really nice but just always says migraine people are extra sensitive and to be kind to myself and give myself lots of time to rest but life doesn't always work like that!

OP posts:
wipebored · 04/08/2025 12:20

@Cedrabbage Yeah I tests a couple of times a year and my iron does tend to be low if I don't supplement. I take iron tablets and B Vitamins year round now and I also take Vitamin D. I haven't have my D levels done in a while though but again I do supplement year round.

considered fibromyalgia?

Try fasting ☺️

Fasting isn't a catch all for good health.

Certainly not on here, that thread that's going is eating disorders under another name. 'How long can we starve ourselves for this week'.

It really bugs me that doctors won't investigate stuff anymore. You have to be really bolshy and know exactly what you want testing for and that doesn't work for everyone.

Some people use that AI thing to narrow stuff down. I don't know good it is though.

wipebored · 04/08/2025 12:24

@BCBird I have considered it, I'm not sure though. I don't have the pressure points really. Its possible but then is there even any fix for fibro?

OP posts:
wipebored · 04/08/2025 12:25

@gamerchick Thanks for that and yes, fasting doesn't work for everyone or everything. I will perhaps put all my issue into Chatgpt to see if it comes up with anything. Hopefully it won't schedule me for deletion!

I read your OP and was just going to suggest hypermobility.

I've recently found out I'm hypermobile at age 47 after developing terrible knee issues after I had to stop exercising post surgery.

I started looking into it and it explained SO much.

I always needed a daytime sleep. Like I slept two hrs a day until I started school, then 12hrs a night at primary, by teens I was back to napping again at the weekends or if I had a free period at college. In my 20s I had to sleep in my car at lunchtime or nap in the staff toilets. When my DC were little, I slept when they slept.

I think my hypermobility has made me very tired. I also developed tendon issues just before I started HRT which I am managing with physio and osteopath support. I ended up with prolapses which recurred after surgery.

I can't stand for very long. I get low diastolic blood pressure and get pre-syncope when I climb stairs. It's worse in big places like supermarkets or art galleries.

Something is always hurting. I'm always bruised somewhere! I have excema patches that I treat like whack-a-mole! I'm asthmatic and seem to also have developed reflux.

I don't have migraines thank goodness!

But perhaps this is worth looking into? Esp as you 'put your back out' so easily.

How much yoga and pilates do you do?

wipebored · 04/08/2025 14:19

@Notsurewheretostarthere Thanks for this, I have thought of some kind of hypermobility before and I think if I do the bendability tests at home I'm right on the cusp of passing. So for example I am also 47 and get 5 on the Beighton Scale which is either just at or under the diagnostic criteria. I do have Piezogenic Papules since as long as I can remember but these could be very normal. I get petechiae on various parts of my body and all over my face and neck when I am sick or cough, not sure how typical that is. My feet also have collapsing arches so they aren't flat they have an arch when I have no weight on them but when I stand up the arch completely flattens. I also have one ankle that is very bad and unstable and I think this contributes to issues I have with my hips and knees.

Yes to always needing to nap, and yes to feeling faint and weak when standing for long periods. I do get that thing when I stand up after sitting or lying down that my vision narrows and goes black for a few seconds which I always put down to low blood pressure. I also get patches of eczema and experience breathlessness randomly but have never been diagnosed with Asthma.

I don't have very stretchy skin, its actually quite thick and tight.

I don't do as much yoga as I used to my much loved yoga teacher who I'd been with for years retired a few years ago. Do you find doing this work helps?

Not really sure what to pursue, if I could afford private care I'd perhaps be more willing to go in and say I think I have an underlying issue but to go to my GP with a lot of niggly, chronic things always seems to end up with an offer of an antidepressant.

Thanks for the suggestion though, something to think about, I suppose a concern for undiagnosed EDS is the risk of aortic aneurysm going undetected.

Oh my god
thank god it’s not just me I thought I was either dying or going mad or was just being pathetic

wipebored · 04/08/2025 17:18

@DogsandFlowers Its very difficult because you are in pain and uncomfortable all the time but its so vague and your afraid to talk about it or see a doctor because you don't want to be labelled a malingerer.

I know, plus waiting for a GP appointment can take ages by which time you’re having a good run, have you tried a good quality magnesium supplement? Also don’t worry what the GP practice thinks of you if you’re feeling unwell just keep going back.

wipebored · 04/08/2025 17:44

@DogsandFlowers I had a bad response to mag glycinate but am looking to try a different version next. Yeah I will make an appointment to discuss things soon.

Have you tried nutrition geeks? Reasonably priced as well

wipebored · 04/08/2025 21:24

@DogsandFlowers They all seem to contain the Glycinate form and I want to avoid that in future. I think I need to try the Malate version.

OP posts:
Notsurewheretostarthere · 05/08/2025 05:28

@wipebored i adore my Mag Glycinate, I sleep like a baby on it. I get one from amazon and I take 400mg of elemental magnesium every night about 6pm.

But if you do go for Malate make sure you take it in the morning as it is energy giving. You can also take it with Vitamin D/K and some good fats for better absorption.

CalicoPusscat · 05/08/2025 05:33

I couldn't sleep last night with a headache, you're not alone!

Some of the Amazon ones have been found to be laced with melatonin

I don't have the pressure points as such. It can be defined as widespread body pain. When I.have a flare up.it feels like a mild dose of the flu- bad enough i know. Day to day i ache/ have pains. I have tablets to.dampen these down and make things more manageable. I generally feel crap.if I bang my arm, finger etc the pain is disproportionate to the injury. Hope you get some relief OP.

Notsurewheretostarthere · 05/08/2025 06:41

@Iftheressomethingstrange crikey!
I think I'd know by now if they were causing me a problem, it's been three years.

Any idea what brands?

Scentedjasmin · 05/08/2025 06:48

I felt like this. Turns out I had low iron. Not enough to flag me as anaemic, but just 2 points above the threshold so no one did anything about it for years. Below 15 is anaemic. My count was 17. A normal count is over 100. 15-36 is considered low I think. Anyway, I was having really heavy periods, so started on transexamic acid and also on 400mg of iron a day with vit c. My count is now up to 43. Still a way to go, but I cannot tell you how different I feel! Far less headaches/migraines. Much more energy and motivation. Less run down. Fewer aches. Better sleep. Get your iron levels and vit B12 levels checked.

Oblomov25 · 05/08/2025 06:53

I often wonder why I feel so shit permanently. I've had blood tests and been checked. Never had anyone give me any meaningful reason.
