How does this work for train tickets?

For UK trains, is there a difference between buying a ticket at the train office and buying a ticket online and then printing it out and using it? Is the latter option even possible? Can someone literally print out a ticket from their computer?

Yes you can - or use it on your phone. You scan the barcode/QR code at the barrier, or show the ticket checking person. You can sometimes also buy online to print at the station. (Probably not a little rural station, but I haven't tried, so could br wrong.)

There can be pricing differences between buying online and in person, but UK rail pricing is incomprehensible anyway.

Yep, print-at-home is a thing. They email you a PDF with a QR code you can scan at barriers or show the staff. Mobile ticket is even easier though: less faff, no paper, works the same. Only thing to watch is if your station doesn’t have scanners, then you might need to show it to the conductor manually.

Do you have to download the specific train booking app that you booked the train ticket with or can you use what is sent to your email to scan?

You can use the bar code from the email. However, it's easier just to show your phone.

OP, you don’t need use an app. If you prefer you can just use websites and email to book with most booking sites. Some of the cheaper fares are restrictive in travel times, or one particular timed train only. Sometimes you can get a cheaper ticket if you book early. It can be all quite bonkers.

Finally, some charge a booking fee and some don’t. There are plenty of options without the fee out there. Check before you pay.

So do most others, including Uber, which gives you cash credits on bookings made. Trainline on the other hand charge a fee.
