Scouts camp - girls and boys in tents together

Dd 13 has returned from a scouts camp (happy, loved it, no complaints) and just casually named who she shared a tent with - and it was mixed boys and girls!

Am genuinely shocked, I had no idea. She’s been going since beavers, so knows the other scouts and leaders well but at all previous camps has only shared with girls.

Am quite surprised. School trips have all been segregated. Not sure how I feel about it…

I want to add that they were technically rangers and Explorer scouts. Not ten year olds.

Still very sad looking back in hindsight with my safeguarding eyes open.

They're allowed to share as long as all are happy with the situation. We only have one girl in our troop and she'd rather share with boys than sleep on her own. They have to be provided with a separate changing area so we provide an extra tent for this.

In my not very mis-spent youth, I staffed several jamborees. On more than one camp toilets in the staff field (which included rangers / explorers as well as adult leaders) were blocked by condoms. One camp chief commented 'at least they're having safe sex'...
They had a point, but yes, safeguarding nightmare!
