Holiday sofa bed unusable

Weedkillerworks · 03/08/2025 17:25

Arrived on holiday today, driving, flight, more driving, heat etc. Accommodation is a villa - a bit shabby but not dreadful. However, I’ve just put the sofa bed up and there is no way anyone can sleep on it.

It’s one of those ric-rac ones that folds out to a large single, but the mechanism makes a big lumpy line down the middle.

We need three sleeping spaces due to children, partners etc but this sofa bed is meant to be my bed and I know it’s impossible.

Villa run independently so not like I can request a new room.

What would you do?

Can you share a bed with a child if one of them is yours tonight or get a child to share with their parents then buy an airbed tomorrow? If everyone is adults but a room has a spare bed, might just have to share for tonight until you can the airbed?

Weedkillerworks · 03/08/2025 17:48

An airbed is an idea. Though I don’t really fancy spending a week on an airbed after all the money I’ve spent on this place to be honest.

The children are big teens so no bed sharing possible. The one I could share the room with is ASD and really needs their own space, hence finding somewhere with three bedroom spaces.

I’m just pissed off that they’ve advertised this as a sofa bed and it’s not fit for purpose.

I’m a single parent and it’s the first time in years we’ve had a sun holiday. I think I will feel better after some
sleep. But not on that bed.

An airbed and make sure the B&B foot the bill for it. I'd knock the price down too.

Weedkillerworks · 03/08/2025 18:08

You’re right. Aaagh ffs. Came on holiday for relaxation not fucking this. I definitely need some
sleep.

You could put an airbed/ mattress on top of the sofa bed, so you’re off the ground and hopefully won’t feel any lumps

MinnieCauldwell · 03/08/2025 18:12

Are there any sun loungers with comfy cushions?
Or buy a sleeping bag to put over the top amd sleep on

TerrifiedandWorried · 03/08/2025 18:15

Is it big enough to sleep on the sofa without unfolding? If you get an airbed, get an electric one that you leave plugged in and majntains its pressure. They're as comfy as normal beds.

Sadly no, it’s far too narrow. And I am not.

I doubt I’ll be able to find an airbed let alone an electric one. I’m on a small holiday island.

There are a lot of sun loungers - that is a possibility, thank you.

Put the mattress on the floor, if you can move it off the sofa.

RandomMess · 03/08/2025 18:30

Have you contacted them now and asked them for their solution? Along with photographs.

That is what I would like to do. I will have to speak to the owner. Feel like I need to ask for permission to start moving furniture.

Cannot believe this place has 5 star reviews. Makes me question the whole reviews system. (Booking dot com)

Why as the mum and funder of the holiday are you the one on the sofa bed without your own room?

It’s all one piece, no separate mattress alas.

No I haven’t. I can’t face it. I am currently being a coward. I’m knackered and I’ve already had to ask them for bedding and to vacuum the sofa bed as it was covered in crumbs underneath the throw.

I will share the room tonight and address it in the morning when I might feel a little bit of resilience.

Ah I've read it you're on hols with your teens... but is it several families?

DelphiniumBlue · 03/08/2025 18:35

That’s a shame.
Put one of the teens on it, they don’t feel lumps and bumps as much as you will. Plus, as you’ve paid, it should be you getting a bed.
Meanwhile, make a formal complaint right now, with photos. It may be that the owner can do something, no point in waiting.

Good question. Because the plan seemed to keep everyone happy and if everyone is happy that means I can relax. Also the DC with ASD is a light sleeper and I will probably wake them in the night and then feel bad.

My teens and a partner of one DC

You’re right. I really can’t face it tonight though - have been up since the early hours for the flight.

Ask for an extra double or king duvet. Fold that up as a mattress topper on top of the z-bed. That's what I do. Airbeds can get a bit hot and sweaty from my camping experience!

Weedkillerworks · 03/08/2025 18:38

Thanks for your support and ideas, everyone FlowersFlowersFlowers

It has helped to vent here. I will address it in the morning.

Agree, airbeds are not the best but good in some circumstances. My camping days are behind me.

The mechanism is too hard and lumpy to be solved by a duvet, unfortunately. It’s a big hinge mechanism so the back of the sofa folds flat to make half the bed. A small child or two would be ok on it but no one else.

Can you try the mattress on the floor? Often comfier than you would imagine.
