Would you pay £11 for a baked potato in a cafe?

I went to a garden centre today and teen dc wanted a drink and a lunch/snack. There wasn’t much choice on the menu at the cafe apart from toasted sandwiches and cakes so dc chose a baked potato with beans which was £11. I nearly fell over. They don’t even particularly like baked potatoes. I said, No sorry I’m not paying that for a potato. I’ve got a four pack of Tesco baking potatoes at home that cost 79p. We left the cafe and went somewhere else where a proper meal was £13.

Anyway am I behind the times with prices or does that seem a lot to you?

@NeverAlways tell DC when she’s paying she can make her own choices

RentalWoesNotFun · 02/08/2025 19:35

£8 for a tuna spud at my garden centre. Comes absolutely loaded with filling and salad.

susiedaisy1912 · 02/08/2025 20:00

Garden centre jacket potato’s are between £9-12 in my area but usually have better toppings and some sort of side salad and coleslaw. Cafes are slightly cheaper usually around £7.50-8.00.

Yes, but only if it was in a cafe on the top of Everest!

Snorlaxo · 02/08/2025 20:06

I had a baked potato for dinner tonight- 29p from Aldi and it was giant.

I might pay £11 for a potato with premium toppings like pulled pork or steak and it would need to make me full enough until my next meal. No way would I pay that for beans.

Bjorkdidit · 02/08/2025 20:13

No because baked potatoes take a long time to cook so a cafe is almost certainly going to to dreadful things like reheat or even freeze, which means it will be horrible.

If eating out, I prefer to stick to food that can't be made the same or better at home with no effort, skill or specialist ingredients so I'd almost certainly never be in a position where I am paying for someone else to make a shit version of something I can make better at home.

In this situation my number 1 choice is something from a fish and chip shop because we don't have a fat fryer, which costs quite a lot to fill and run, and despite being fried, is reasonably healthy as not full of crap that you get in other commercially prepared food.

MalcolmMoo · 02/08/2025 20:50

Just checked and our local cafe is £8.95 and we’re in a fairly expensive area. So £11 does seem a lot. I don’t think m I’d pay £11 that said we’re on holiday atm and I paid £17.50 for a salad at lunch! Prices are just mad now

No, I'd never have one in a cafe anyway as they never have crispy skin but if I did I'd expect to pay about £6-£7.

Yes! I don't like getting jacket potatoes when we're out but £11 seems expensive however £6-7 seems a bit cheap in a restaurant even if a garden centre

BopItWinner · 02/08/2025 20:59

It is expensive but yes we have paid £12 in our local ‘posh’ cafe.

Pinepeak2434 · 02/08/2025 21:02

No way especially as it’s probably microwaved.

MagnificentBastard · 02/08/2025 21:14

I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t notice the price. But it seems reasonable to me.

YetanotherNC25 · 02/08/2025 21:35

That’s daylight robbery. I’d have walked out too.

FloofyBird · 02/08/2025 21:40

Nope. In fact I saw a menu recently where it was £10 for a sandwich or baked potato. I won't be going there.

SwanFlight · 02/08/2025 21:43

Rip of Britain innit. Small cake and coffee over £8 pp the other day.

Greenbird88 · 02/08/2025 22:04

Sounds fairly steep, but garden centre cafes often are IME. It wouldn’t occur to me to get up and leave once I’d actually sat down/committed to eating there though. I just might think twice about going again.

Startthecar · 02/08/2025 22:26

I'd have walked out too OP.
Places like that, that aren't real eating places, cash in because of the convenience they're offering customers who feel like noshing on some easy food, yeah, easy for those who make it, but not do easy on the wallet.
You always pay more for convenience .

Chasingaces · 02/08/2025 22:40

Just looked at a couple close to me and they are £10 and £11…

HansHolbein · 02/08/2025 22:40

Fuck no!

MaloryJones · 02/08/2025 23:07

No I would not

MaloryJones · 02/08/2025 23:09

Overthebow · 02/08/2025 18:55

No not £11. I get prices have gone up and I don’t mind paying normal prices but even where I am in the south east jacket potatoes are usually around £8 in cafes. I wouldn’t pay £11.

Edited

I agree
I am in the South East (London) and they are sold for around £8.00, including 2 fillings and with a bit of side salad, in my local cafe.

Comedycook · 02/08/2025 23:11

That's a lot. For £11 I'd expect a really fancy lovely filling, accompanied by a decent side salad....not baked beans!

ExtremelyDivided · 02/08/2025 23:15

I'd pay more for more expensive fillings like tuna and if there was salad and coleslaw but for plain spud and beans which is what the OP was faced with, no. I know most of the cost is for staffing, utilities etc but I'd rather pay £12 for say sourdough with avocado and all the other fancy bits which is fairly typical in garden centres round us than for a (probably) microwaved spud and beans.

notanothersummercold · 02/08/2025 23:16

Jacket potato is my go to lunch if out but no way would l pay that! £8 max.

Usernamenotavailable19 · 02/08/2025 23:17

Garden centres are always pricey

Tiredofwhataboutery · 02/08/2025 23:22

8.25 at my local dobbies. They aren’t very nice ( maybe baked then microwaved)I like loads of butter and salt Nd they gave me one pat of butter. Gutted.
