Lighthearted, before anyone gets upset about people being ungrateful.

What gifts would you stick on the banned list?

For me, it’s the classic glitter and slime-based toys. Special mention to toys with 4000 loose parts too.

Don’t buy them anything just take them off my hands for a few hours!!

To be fair we don’t really do gifts as much as other people, generally me and my DB/SIL just do days out for their birthdays and then when it’s an adults birthday the other adults will have the kids overnight, or sometimes for a weekend.

Honestly I have mild trauma from DD putting Lego up her nose, so I’m not keen on Lego. She “liked the smell” so I am suspicious that if given the chance she might do it again. Not keen on slime either, but if they keep it in the kitchen I’ll allow it. Also bath crayons, DS got some and they were great… but then he started drawing on the walls thinking it would wash off.

Absolutely not. The best possible intro to music you could give a child.

justanotherdrama · 02/08/2025 18:15

When we moved house we gave tonnes of “unwanted gifts” to charity there were boxes and boxes of those awful 3 for £10/12 craft sets that b&m and the works have - absolute tat
I remember looking at it all thinking it all thinking what a huge waste of money!!!

the charity shop seemed very happy tho I was just relieved as I’d kept it all hidden in cupboards etc but when we moved it had to go!!!

I always try to give gifts that people like I always ask what the kids want OR I give a voucher for somewhere. I never recycle any of this rubbish!

LadyLapsang · 02/08/2025 18:44

A TV for their bedroom.

ccridersuz · 02/08/2025 19:00

Let kids have fun, they are only kids once!.
I’d never send out a list of what to buy my kids.

Dear xxxxxxx
Its my child’s birthday, please don’t buy the following or any platic crap or anything under £10 for him/her.

Regards
xxxxxx’s mum
(I’m to lazy to get the hoover out)

I don't understand the kinetic sand hatred - we love the stuff 😁!

Gets hours of play here and doesn't dry out like playdoh.

Hideous clothing covered in paw patrol or cocomelon or whatever other shit kids TV program.

This. Anything character related (except MAYBE bluey).

Justgorgeous · 02/08/2025 19:54

Haribos, sugary shit.

UncertainPerson · 02/08/2025 19:58

Temu tat

123456abcdef · 02/08/2025 20:00

Peppa pig

cheap nasty character clothing which doesn’t wash well and looks horrible almost immediately and my child still wants to wear it everywhere

Toy music instruments 😐

My mum solves that by buying real ones.

What every two year old needs. A good quality tambourine.

Tryonemoretime · 02/08/2025 20:03

I'm probably the neighbour from hell. I bought their kids potato guns and fart cushions. On the other hand, I must have done something right, as we're still in touch years later. I blooming loved those neighbours! And still miss the gorgeous little boys (grown up now) who ate my chocolate and ambushed me when I was in the garden! The new neighbours? Love their little girls, too. They can spread glitter all round my kitchen any time they like!

whatsit84 · 02/08/2025 20:09

Playdough!! I binned all ours recently. Kids have got over it 😂. I can’t face them opening the fucking kinetic sand either.

A mum friend bought my daughter a toy (but working) accordion for her third birthday.

itsabeautifuldayjuly · 02/08/2025 20:43

Cars or footballs. yes, they are boys. No , not the slightest interest in either.
Random lego sets. one isn’t interested at all, the other only in specific sets.
We do love craft stuff though.

My biggest ever regret was buying my son a ball pit for Xmas. It was the worst idea that I ever had!

Don't do it people! Get play doh instead 😂

Mine are adults and the only time I objected to any gift as those repulsive Bratz dolls. I didn’t even give it to charity it was so abhorrent, it went straight in the bin .

It was bought as a birthday gift from a daughters classmate. Truly horrible thing.

They were my favourite dolls as a child! I had dozens and LOVED the various films

Argh we did this too, still finding the balls in random places after giving it away ages ago 😂

slightlydistrac · 03/08/2025 12:12

Kerplunk. Ages of fiddling to set it up for two minutes of play, then set the darn thing up all over again, ad infinitum. Not so bad once they are old enough to do it themselves, but otherwise a pain in the neck.

Francestein · 03/08/2025 12:43

@Nottodaythankyou123 The one I bought was on eBay. The only one I can find now is this guy:-

My DS is now an adult but I banned toys with magnets especially the ones that build by connecting magnets, far too dangerous. Frankly they should never be allowed because if swallowed they attract inside the intestines and easily ‘cut’ through soft tissue creating internal wounds apparently similar to bullet wounds. At least one child died because of this injury.

Mumof2amazingasdkiddos · 03/08/2025 18:00

Thank you for the list of ideas of what to get my twin nieces and piss off my horrible sister 😂

SunshineAndFizz · 03/08/2025 18:22

Party blowers in the party bag.

No one wants to hear one of those all the way back from a soft play party.

angela1952 · 03/08/2025 18:25

Cheap dolls, my GD hates dolls anyway and my daughter was never keen though she had one that she chose for herself.
