If she was white, I bet it wouldn’t have occurred to you that she might identify as anything other than British. She was born in Wimbledon and has lived in this country for most of her life.

Quite.

RominaDina · 02/08/2025 15:42

Her identity, her choice. She's British.

Yeah, those who think its odd etc are surely in the “you can’t be British you’re not white” contingent.

Yes, how offensive to assume she can't be British!

AgnesX · 02/08/2025 17:06

In some ways I'm sympathetic, not just to her specifically, but to second generation children who aren't one culture or the other.

It's not just about how she/they sees herself/ themselves it's how other people do. And that perception isn't always kind

TheChosenTwo · 02/08/2025 17:07

And? I’m not a fan of the woman’s politics but as a mixed race woman I don’t identify with the side of my heritage that isn’t here in the U.K. I’ve been and spent time there with family, it’s a beautiful part of the world and a very popular tourist destination, it’s a part of my genetic makeup and history but I don’t identify with it in any way. So fucking what?

RominaDina · 02/08/2025 17:07

"I'm British"
"No, where are you really from?"

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 02/08/2025 17:08

Tbh it's never occurred to me that she didn't identify as being British.

Meadowfinch · 02/08/2025 17:10

I could have either a German passport or a British one.

I chose British. I feel British. I'm not sure why it's a big deal.

Me neither. I appreciate if you move countries in adulthood it is almost impossible fully transition yourself to your new nationality and you probably live between nationalities culturally but if you have spent most of your childhood in a country then that is what you are- your heritage is irrelevant as you take your culture from the country you live in and not from where your parents came from.

She probably feels she has to say it because people like the OP get confused.

Yes, it's just a shame she has to say it.

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2025 18:32

Fair enough. I would want a British person to be the leader of a major party. Not one with sympathies to elsewhere.
