Thought I'd vacuum under the rattan magazine rack and found lots and lots of these white cocoon things!! Also one on the side of the sofa.
Are these clothes moths larvae?

What's the best way to deal with this?

They look like case-bearing moth larvae. They create a case from silk and debris from which they feed on wool, fur, and hair, so might be eating your carpet. I’m sure if you google, you will find a treatment for them.

GingerPaste · 01/08/2025 21:39

Yes, they are I’m afraid. Not sure how to deal with them (I have my own on-going infestation).

herbalteabag · 01/08/2025 21:40

Yes they are. I had loads of these on a rolled up wool rug I hadn't touched for a long time. They had eaten a whole section of it. I just hoovered them all up.

They look like carpet moths I'm afraid.

Thanks for the replies.

I have hoovered thoroughly, moved all furniture including the sofa and emptied and aired the rattan magazine rack outside in the sun today. I have also put small cotton wool balls dotted around the place in lavender essential oil as read they hate the smell.

Now noticing some moths round the rest of the house....so on a mission!

I’ve had issues with moth larvae in rattan before - I would bin the magazine rack

mechanicalpencil · 02/08/2025 22:28

That’s interesting @thrive25
They could have come in the rack itself I suppose.

Potentially, or in any item of clothing you have bought

When I had a huge infestation, rentokil told me that many department stores have moths

re the rattan: I found moth ‘webs’ (cocoon discard) in a rattan hamper and was told by an exterminator they were living there (and in my carpets & a feather cushion)

On going battle here too after having pure wool carpet fitted, they obviously came with the carpet, but the worse places we've found the lavae were under rattan/baskets which were on son's bedroom floor, they seem to love that combination. We keep tiny handheld hoover upstairs to catch any moths and have had some success with the pheromone stickers which attract the males only, but afraid it's an ongoing battle. I'm reluctant to use chemicals and just working on the principle of trying to stop them mating so less next season😔
