Anyone whitened their teeth who’s allergic to hair dye?

Hi I’ve gone through the process of having Invisalign and have come to the end of my treatment. I went to pick up my retainers yesterday and was given a syringe of boutique whitening that came with the Invisalign package. The dentist wasn’t in, it was just the dental assistant who asked me if I was allergic to anything like hair dye before proceeding to whiten them in my trays at home and I said I had recently had an allergic reaction to hair dye. She said we could try a patch test on my teeth/gum there and then in the chair to which I declined as I was a bit apprehensive and didn’t want to risk getting an allergy in the middle of the school holidays (or at all for that matter). She told me to come in next week and try the patch test with the dentist. I honestly feel like leaving the whitening now as I’m too scared to have the patch test! Has anyone else used it and been ok? She told me someone recently went in who’s allergic to dye and was fine with the whitening but I’m extremely anxious now as I’m allergic to kiwi and melon and other fruits and get awful hives in my throat and struggle to swallow and now have a phobia of trying new things I may be allergic to.

I'm in no way no qualified and have never whitened my teeth.

But! I'm allergic to hair dye and it's the PPD that most people are allergic to which isn't in tooth whitening. So very likely fine.

As you have a lot of allergies however I'd just leave it or have patch test done professionally before having it done.

Thank you.

I was just worried incase it was the hydrogen peroxide.

the dental assistant told me to wait until the dentist is back in next week and have a patch test with him if I didn’t feel comfortable having one with her. I’m just a bit hesitant as if I do get allergic then I don’t want to have a serious reaction or have to go to a&e in the middle of the school holidays. I’d rather just not whiten them. She told me it would probably be a mild reaction and a burning gum, which didn’t really sound reassuring.

I don’t have allergies but have whitened my teeth. It hurts! Not necessarily at the time but afterwards. My bottom front teeth are now very sensitive. I’d think carefully about getting it done.

@Goatalone thanks, I was a bit worried about the pain as I think my teeth are fairly sensitive as it is. I feel like I’m being a nuisance to be honest, as they said they wanted them to be white for the after picture they take and didn’t seem to be taking my allergy fear in to consideration yday😂😬

I’ve used whitening ‘chemicals’ from my dentist - had the moulds made etc.. can’t remember the brand, but when some seeped out of the mould onto my gums, it was SO painful. If your throat tends to swell up over anything, I wouldn’t risk it OP.

Can I ask how you have found the invisalign process?
Was it painful?
Have you got a good end result?

layingwoody · 01/08/2025 21:34

@Foodylicious it was absolutely fine! I didn’t have any pain, a couple of times felt uncomfortable/ tight but only for a day or so. I read so many horror stories and was nervous to start but didn’t experience much discomfort tbh.

a lady told me to change the trays at night before bed, rather than the day I was meant to change them, which I think really helped. As half the transition on to the next tray was done whilst I was asleep, so by the time I woke up my teeth had already shifted a bit and began to fit the tray a bit better, avoiding the tight stage.

I also got some Invisalign chewies on Amazon that helped and made them more comfortable.

my teeth, especially the bottom were extremely crooked! I found people would look at my bottom teeth whilst I was talking and it made me quite self conscious. One tooth on the bottom left was really turned in that it looked like it wasn’t there and someone once asked me if I was missing a tooth😂 that was the final straw when I realised they needed sorting.

They have straightened out now and look so much better than they did. They’re not absolutely perfect I think a couple could move ever so slightly more if I was being fussy, but I got the mid package and had free refinements twice. They looked a lot better than to begin with and decided to not pay for another lot of refinements again to try and fix two minor adjustments.

i would go for it if you are thinking of it 🙂
