Be honest, when you see fat people running?

When you see an overweight person out running what do you think? As a morbidly obese person I always used to admire their confidence and ability. I am now an overweight person (size 16) and I still feel like the size 24 I once was. I feel like everyone is looking at me and thinking ‘look at the state of her’.

Do you judge fat runners badly or do you think ‘well done’?

God this is so horribly patronising

It sounds VERY American.

Yeah, maybe she's only got those 20 minutes to run and not have kids/partner/friends on at her and socialising with the patronising Runners who think it's their place to judge someone (even if it's complimentary) would wreck it

As a fat person myself I wonder how they manage it and how their knees are doing! I don't make any negative judgements and even if I did that would be my problem.

loulouljh · 01/08/2025 14:29

I think well done. Truly.

Matronic6 · 01/08/2025 14:30

I think I'd be impressed.

Partridgewell · 01/08/2025 14:31

I think "good for you". I love running, partly for my physical health but mostly for my mental health. I have never been for a run and felt less happy than I did before the run and you absolutely can't put a price on that.

JustMyView13 · 01/08/2025 14:32

I think - fair play.

When I ran the marathon, you see people of all shapes & sizes. And let me tell you, my respect lies firmly with those that cross the finish line with the longest times. They’re performing at their personal best, for a much longer time frame than the pro-athletes.
Good luck if you’re about to embark on your running journey. Definitely invest in some comfy running trainers & socks.

Fibrous · 01/08/2025 14:32

Yeah I think good for them, and that reminds me I need to get a run in.

whenever I’m out running and anyone is looking at me or shouting from their cars I just feel smug that I’m out for a run and they’re just sat there festering in their vehicles.

congrats on your weight loss and improved fitness.

Kerkyra2024 · 01/08/2025 14:32

I wish them well on their fitness journey I began going to the gym in April to get a hang on my weight (I was a size 24-26 and now a 22). So far I have lost a stone. It may be slow progress but I'm happy with what I've managed so far

Pipplestop · 01/08/2025 14:32

I think, well done you

LauderSyme · 01/08/2025 14:32

I think "good for you" and admire them, not just for the actual running but also for the mindset which propels them to get up, get out and put the effort in. I also wonder whether it's doing their knees and ankles much good!

Skye99 · 01/08/2025 14:33

ThatCleverCoralCrow · 01/08/2025 13:31

I respect that as clearly trying to get fitter and healthier!

Same.

AngelicKaty · 01/08/2025 14:33

LuckysDadsHat · 01/08/2025 13:29

I am always full of admiration and respect. That's literally all I think.

I have been fat, then thin and now plump again! And when I see these people it makes me feel guilty it's not me doing it!

@22O725 Exactly this. 👆 I also feel guilty for not having the courage and determination to do the same. No thoughts other than admiration and respect from me.

Tablesandchairs23 · 01/08/2025 14:33

I always think good on you. As I do when see all people exercising.

ThatCyanCat · 01/08/2025 14:34

It has to be ChatGPT...

A male version of was doing the rounds about 10+ years ago, I think it started from Reddit, so it might be ChatGPT or it might just be repurposed.

I don't think much when I see overweight people exercising. There's usually several in the gym when I'm there, gym bunnies are quite rare there. If I'm painfully honest, I sometimes think they're not wearing very flattering gear but gym fashion is usually ridiculous. A stunning gym bunny in those stupid arse scrunch things (thank God they seem to be on the way out) looks pretty stupid.

Daisy03 · 01/08/2025 13:30

I really admire anyone who’s running, and if they look out of breath or tired I assume it’s possibly because they’ve already run a great distance or have been pushing themselves. It’s amazing for anyone to try and get healthy.

My thoughts too.

MaryTheTurtle · 01/08/2025 14:35

I can barely think about my life let alone wonder about others
let people be to do what they do

BanningTheWordNaice · 01/08/2025 14:36

Anyone judging anyone doing anything that is good for their health does not have an opinion worth holding.

outdooryone · 01/08/2025 14:37

Jealousy.
That they are able to stick at running when I come up with every excuse why not and slack off (again).

cheezncrackers · 01/08/2025 14:38

I'm a fellow runner and think 'Good for you', because running is hard enough when you're a normal weight, it must be really hard work if you're carrying extra weight. Nothing but respect from me.

TtbbOnTheFloor · 01/08/2025 14:38

OP do you really need to know what people are thinking? TBH I think all the patronising admiration is really offputting. Fat women only acceptable in society if they appear to be trying not to be fat. Do what works for you, ignore those who think you owe them something

TimeForABreak4 · 01/08/2025 14:38

I honestly think "good for you" every single time. I'm not overweight but I'm certainely not fit.

Dancingsquirrels · 01/08/2025 14:38

Honestly, I don't give it much thought, unless I'm in their way or vice versa

Most people are just getting on with their own lives and not paying as much attention to us as we think

handsdownthebest · 01/08/2025 14:39

22O725 · 01/08/2025 13:39

Perhaps it’s not about the body and just about the fitness. I have no interest in lifting anything.

Completely the wrong advice for an overweight person...however, weightlifting can be paired with cardio when you're trying to loose weight because it will help with strength and toning.
If you enjoy running then just keep getting out there. It is about growing fitness and cardio strength. Good on you for getting out there...that's what I think when I see larger people running.
Keep going 😊
