Be honest, when you see fat people running?

When you see an overweight person out running what do you think? As a morbidly obese person I always used to admire their confidence and ability. I am now an overweight person (size 16) and I still feel like the size 24 I once was. I feel like everyone is looking at me and thinking ‘look at the state of her’.

Do you judge fat runners badly or do you think ‘well done’?

Aw lucky fat people, gaining your approval for once. Go you!

Oh sod off. The fat person asked if people judged or not.
I'm giving a perspective.

Admiration and respect.

I check out their running shoes and sometimes I idly wonder how far they are running if they are speedy.

Wonderwall23 · 01/08/2025 17:28

I think 'good on you'.

It's admiration so I hope that doesn't sound patronising...It's just how I feel. For context I am very slim and do a bit of running although by no means do I look good doing it.

If I drive past someone running I get a bit of envy, no matter who they are. My DH says the same. I admire anyone who runs but I think there's something extra special about someone who is a beginner/overweight/non-conventional who is working hard to give it a go.

ETA there is a woman who runs near me who I have driven or walked past many times over about 3-4 years. She was very big initially and is still big but much less so. She is just a random stranger and I doubt she knows who I am. But I think she's brilliant and seeing her always gives me a little boost...I love seeing people achieving something.

Perhaps it’s not about the body and just about the fitness. I have no interest in lifting anything.

Maybe not but are you interested in not suffering from osteoporosis and being able to use the toilet as you age?

Blueuggboots · 01/08/2025 16:45

I’m always impressed and want to shout encouraging nice things out of the window!!

Dont. That might not be received as positive.

It's a bit patronising to be honest.

It takes bottle to go running in public if overweight and run the gauntlet of getting abuse from idiots who think they're hilarious.
Good on anyone getting out there 👍

This is what I think. There are too many utter knobs out there who feel obliged to express their judgy opinions when it's not been asked for.

In a similar vein, also tend towards "Good for you" at swimming pools, as it takes bottle to get into a swimsuit in public when you're feeling very self-conscious about your appearance.

WTF is this shit?

It’s actually a well known piece of writing, or was when it came out.

Lushvegetation · 01/08/2025 17:51

Full of admiration.

My god it's patronising.

Ebenezerscrogge · 01/08/2025 18:01

Most of the overweight runners I know are way faster than me who is tall and pretty slim . So normally I think they are going to fly past me . Enjoy OP

AmadeustheAlpaca · 01/08/2025 18:02

Sorry to say OP, but I think there are a lot of untruthful people on this thread who are pretending to be full of admiration and awe for overweight people who run.
Many people, myself included, don't give much thought to any size of runners. I'd just think there's a runner, hope they're not going to get in the way and hog the pavement or path in the park.

Well known doesn’t equal good or appropriate.

Genuinely nothing remotely negative, in fact I think ‘good for you, I wish I could do that!’

I’m not looking for people to be full of admiration so that’s ok. I’m mostly looking for people not to think ‘look at the state of that fatty’

I think, bloody well done... I need to start running again.

Noshowlomo · 01/08/2025 18:05

As a fat person who runs, I think I look brilliant! Go me!!
Ive lost 3st 3, so feeling better but still 3 st overweight, so I’ll carry on.
When I see other fat people running I think YES!

Usually I think good on them. I’m a size 12 and should run but can’t get down the street without puffing.

I do sometimes worry if theyre a new runner that they’re damaging their joints and may be better with low impact sports. But that’s just because I know some people who ruined their knees running.

MrsPinkSky · 01/08/2025 18:07

I work in a park and I can honestly say I don't think anything at all.

Over the course of my working day I probably see around 15+ joggers and runners.

I'm no more likely to have any thoughts about them than I am about people walking their dogs.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 01/08/2025 18:09

I think good on them and that's bloody brilliant. If they are bigger bigger though I still think great but that they would be better off doing a longer VERY brisk walk. Running is great for happy hormones but not so great on the joints if very overweight. It could be something to transition to. But running beats sitting on the couch watching loose women ANY day of the week!

usedtobeaylis · 01/08/2025 18:14

I am the fat person running. I'm absolutely buzzing that I'm capable of it. I've lost enough weight to re-start something I used to love, it's my absolute favourite exercise. So I definitely don't think anything negative about other fat people running. The first time I ever started running, years ago, it was a Jog Scotland group and the group leader was a little round middle aged woman and she had more stamina than anyone else in the group. I quickly learned that anybody can run and that people who piss on that parade are soul suckers not worth bothering about. Running is unbeatable.

WonderingWanda · 01/08/2025 18:19

I think good on them. Always remember you are going faster than someone sat on their sofa. I am a size 14 and particularly slow runner and I've always found fast runners to be very supportive. I ran with a club for a while and even did some races with them and all the fast runner going past me would tell me well done and offer encouragement.

Blueuggboots · 01/08/2025 18:30

@OneNeatBlueOrca- I don’t. I said I WANT to, not that I DO?!
