Why do brands skip sizes??

This (maybe unreasonably) grinds my gears.

I have an 8yo and 11yo DD. DD1 needs age 12-13 clothes according to height, and DD2 wears age 8-9. . I’m currently shopping for new school clothes, but have hit a stumbling block when trying to get them sportswear.

A lot of the big brands skip sizes. Typically they go 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 etc.

I have previously erred on the side of caution and bought them the bigger size, but they are far too long. However, the smaller size is verging on too small and won’t even last a term.

what does everyone else do in these situations?

Their school jumpers are the same 🤯

I have the same issue right now - ideally I’d have one in 6-7 and one in 8-9. The bigger one I’m buying 9-10 for as she’s tall and it’s a fit baggy but the length is ok. The smaller one is a little tank so managing with the 5-6 we’ve got and holding out on buying 7-8 as will be too long 😬

Annoyingly - when you go to ‘size guide’ on these brands it shows the in between sizes even thought they don’t sell them 🤦‍♀️

It doesn’t help with branded school jumpers etc but I’ve always found that there is a fair bit of variation in different brands sizes and that by trying somewhere else you either find they do do the intermediate size or it fits anyway. M&S do skinny/plus fit school uniform which helps if otherwise the right size is the wrong length, many school uniform trousers also have adjustable waists (Sainsbury’s definitely does) which I found helped when you need extra length.
