Overpriced Clothes on Vinted.

Just saw a tshirt listing for Six pounds on Vinted for a m and s t shirt.
When you add the buyer protection and postage it's not worth it.
M and S have got a half price sale on at the moment. Asda sell new t shirts for 7 pounds also.

This drives me crazy. There was a gorgeous cardigan I wanted, she was asking £12 for it but it was only from Asda! With postage and buyers protection it was going to be much more than if bought direct from Asda. I offered her £5 and she took offence Confused

redskydelight · 30/07/2025 14:11

So don't buy it if you don't think it's worth it?

It might not even be overpriced - it might be better quality than the ones you are comparing to. Or it might be something that's discontinued but people specifically want.

Plus everyone overprices on Vinted because they know people will make offers (which is your other option - to put in an offer for what you are prepared to pay).

It’s no longer for sale at Asda presumably?

ThejoyofNC · 30/07/2025 14:25

I honestly don't think it's worth buying anything under £20 odd on vinted. Unless you create a bundle of cheaper items.

When stuff is listed for a few quid, the cost more than doubles when you add buyer protection and postage.

legsekeven · 30/07/2025 15:10

The amount of m&s summer beauty bags up for £50 plus makes me laugh. Surely they wont sell

PurplePeugoet · 30/07/2025 15:14

Someone on our local selling group was selling a second hand excercise bike for £200.
Someone commented that there was a newer model actually on sale in Argos for £170 atm so they might want to reconsider. Seller said but I paid £250, I have proof. Couldn’t see that they would never sell it for more than a current new bike!!

Smartiepants79 · 30/07/2025 15:16

Personally I see it the other way round! Selling items that are a decent brand, brand new with tags, cost about £35 in the first place. Asking around £10 for them and people come along and ask if you’ll sell it for a fiver! Umm no, I’ll keep hold of it and try again next month. I’d rather give to the charity shop if I’m just giving it away!
If the price is too high, don’t buy it. No one else will and the person selling can then decide what to do with it. People can charge what they want. You don’t have to buy it.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 30/07/2025 15:21

Some Vinted sellers are chancing their arm - so I just scroll past. No one is forcing you to buy.

Nearly all my clothes come from Vinted. Today everything I'm wearing (apart from my underwear) is from Vinted, total cost about £30 Inc postage etc. Shoes, jeans, work top and smart cardigan. I think "new" you'd be looking at close to £150.

I sold a lot of DD’s stuff on Vinted for a couple of quid each max, with maximum discount on for bundles and assuming people would take that option.

Sold pretty much everything but only one or two bundles, the rest people were buying individual items and I was so surprised. I never buy anything for her on there myself unless I can at least make it up to a bundle of 3 or 4 items. It’s just not with the postage/ fees otherwise - unless it’s a more expensive brand I wouldn’t buy new.

Yes I find this more too! Some really cheeky offers that literally aren’t worth my time and effort to package it up and parcel drop!

Netcurtainnelly · 30/07/2025 15:28

Vinted dosent factor in the packaging either just the postage.

So if the seller wants to factor this in
that’s their prerogative

It isn’t hard op

Recently saw a bag on Vinted that was BNWT and at least 30% less then it cost new.....at least if you didnt know there was a 60% sale on the original site!
Ive seen quite a few cheeky bleeders pulling this one.😁

it’s not “cheeky” for goodness sakes

ForLovingAquaSheep · 30/07/2025 15:59

If you're buying Primark, Tu, Asda cheap tat then it's never going to be worth it.

If you're buying decent quality clothing that costs more than £2 for child labour to make in the first place then you can get bargains.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 30/07/2025 16:05

If it’s too expensive don’t buy it? I think there are different ways of doing vinted cheap to sell fast, higher and prepared to wait for right buyer. I get lots of new with tag bargains.

I tend to sell kids stuff cheap a dress £2 for example and people make bundles so it’s £20 including buyer protection and p&p but you get seven items. I buy the same way too for kids clothes.

freerangethighs · 30/07/2025 16:08

If it's something that's still available new in the primary market, then I agree it's going to have to be very steeply discounted to compare favourably to just buying new. Even so, the fees, buyers' protection, and postage are beyond the seller's control; they're going to react to a counter-offer based on whether they think they are being fairly compensated for the item itself. If it's not available any more in the primary markets, then the price the seller can reasonably expect is going to depend on multiple factors like how rare the item is, how unusual, how desirable (which may include how trendy it is at the moment), and how other sellers price the same item. Someone who's putting themselves out there to sell shouldn't be visibly taking offence to an apparently good faith offer, but may give short shrift if they're getting a lot of what seem to them like lowball proposals and are willing to wait.

Strider55 · 13/08/2025 08:23

I've found this recently, after looking for new pyjamas and underwear for DD. Lots of new multipacks if nickers from Next, Tu, Marks and Spencers etc that end up being not far off the original price or sometimes more than the original price when you add in the Vinted guarantee and delivery costs.

In comparison I sell most of my things for really low prices, knowing that for the buyer with the delivery and Hinted guarantee it's still going to be a fair amount for a second hand item.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 13/08/2025 08:53

There’s a lot of overpriced things. If it’s something I particularly want, I tend to just favourite it and then wait for the usual reduction in price. One I left on my favourites for 3 months then offered 20% below what they were asking (and still at the top end of what I think I’d pay) they refused. I’ve left it on my favourites and just checked- 6 months on now since I found it and they still haven’t sold it.

it is annoying though to find searches full of overpriced things you have to wade through to get to the realistic ones that you then can buy. Hoping as time goes on, more people get an eye in on what things will sell for.

Holdonasec · 15/08/2025 22:06

As a buyer

If I think things are over priced I don't buy.

I dont do offers (who really has the the time to message someone for 20p off a item that's £1 already).

As a seller

I also dont except offers, again dont have time for that shenanigans.

I already price my items really low to compensate for postage etc.

If things dont sell i reduce my price until they do but when I feel i want to.

Pretty much dont be greedy or grippy.

Netcurtainnelly · 15/08/2025 22:45

How have people got so many new things still tagged

OP posts:
YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 15/08/2025 22:50

People are trying to make a business out of it, but some of the tat is embarrassing

like Etsy. Homemade, shoddy attempts. Are we really saving the planet buying this rubbish?

MynameisJune · 15/08/2025 22:51

So many fakes on Vinted now it’s not worth the risk

Various reasons- there’s a thread running about hating going for a walk and how the only way they want to spend time is to go to the shops and have a mooch around and possibly buy something. There’s a whole group of people who do shop as a leisure activity, lots of the tagged stuff seems be things bought in sales. I do wonder if they are just stuff people have bought because it’s a bargain or they were bored, but then realised it doesn’t suit them/fit them when it’s too late to return.

And obviously, shoplifting.

Wasn't the idea to sell.your clothes cheap and save people buying new.
Do you think they should have branched into selling everything.

They've done very well for themselves anyway the owners
Just goes to show how a simple idea can catch on.
