Orange wine

Dsis and I saw this a few weeks ago on Saturday Kitchen. Unusually, Matt Tebbut liked it, I think he generally doesn’t like anything not straightforward. We were excited to try it and DSis managed to get a bottle in a bigger M&S than my little food hall, £15 a bottle! When we next got together we tried it with great anticipation. It was foul, and we will normally make ourselves get accustomed to anything! We actually poured it away. Has anyone else tried it, what did you think?
Part description from Wikipedia “Orange wine, also known as skin-contact white wine, skin-fermented white wine, or amber wine,[1] is a type of wine made from white wine grapes where the grape skins are not removed but stay in contact with the juice for days or even months, as is more typical with red wines.”

Yes, orange wine is generally not very nice. Now you know.

Cutleryclaire · 30/07/2025 11:57

I’ve only had it once at a friends on a sunny afternoon. It was delicious. I’m not sure which it was though.

It's personal taste isn't it.

I had a glass of incredibly strongly flavoured orange wine in Florence. It was like drinking alcoholic tea. I've since had a bottle that tasted a lot less strong.

I loved it. But for a special drink rather than bolting down in the garden on a sunny day.

ALDI sell one now.

Davros · 30/07/2025 12:00

It certainly is personal taste and I can usually manage to adapt but not this time

The one I tried reminded me a bit of a mead or a liqueur. I wasn't terribly taken by it.

Toarrie · 30/07/2025 12:10

I enjoyed the Aldi sparkling orange wine. My other half hated it, though he generally only likes red.

TonTonMacoute · 30/07/2025 12:18

I was - underwhelmed. It just seemed like a gimmick to me, I will not be buying again.

WickedGoodDoge · 30/07/2025 12:20

I had it in Seville. There were two types- one like a standard wine to have with dinner etc, the other like a sweet dessert wine. The former was OK, drinkable but I probably wouldn’t have it again. The latter was delicious and I would go out of my way to find it again if we went back.

I’ve had quite a few orange wines, but generally in naice restaurants, and it’s always been delicious, so if I see it, I tend to order

Purplerosez · 30/07/2025 12:33

I tried it last year when out with my cool younger colleagues, and the one we had was awful! They agreed, and they really wanted to like it.

I think there's a reason that orange wine never caught on in the thousands and thousands of years that people have been making wine - it's generally not very nice.

Harassedevictee · 30/07/2025 16:01

I’ve tried it on a cruise - Naranjo Torontel Maturana. It was OK but they have wines I prefer more.

CuriousKangaroo · 30/07/2025 16:10

I can’t stand Sauvignon Blanc, but love Chablis. I don’t judge all white wine on the basis of the first (horrible!) glass of SB I tried. And indeed I didn’t dismiss all SBs until I tried many - and some were better than others (though still taste foul to me). I know lots of people love SB.

It’s premature to judge all orange wines on the basis of one bottle you have tried and simply because one person liked it so you assume it must be a nice one.

ETA - I really like a lot of orange wines. But again, not all.

I'm the same. Although the last time I did this (at a lovely place in Glasgow) I was the only one of our table who enjoyed it! It's an acquired taste and can definitely veer into sherry-ish if you (I) don't choose sensibly.

Davros · 30/07/2025 17:23

I like sherry

We love orange wine, but I see it more as more akin to a red than a white. I’ve not tried the M&S one though.
