Is it always wrong to use AI to write a post?

Is it seen as deceitful? Do most people assume it is false or trolling? I have used it before to write a story post as I have an autoimmune disease and it helped me to order my thoughts and make them cohesive.

Personally I come here to interact with people not bots so I am not enamoured of AI posts.

Hatty65 · 30/07/2025 12:16

I'm not interested if it's AI. Just ask the question yourself. Also, a long story is difficult to read.

I'm not replying to bots.

EmpressaurusKitty · 30/07/2025 12:19

I think what can be helpful is if someone mentions in the post that they’re using AI.

I know there are good reasons for it sometimes and a note saying ‘I’m using AI for this post’, even if you don’t explain why, would at least show you’re not a bot.

I hate them. It feels dishonest to me. We build a picture of a poster based on the words they use. It's personal.
Using a bot to talk for you strips your post of any personality or emotion. I feel as though I've been deceived when I realise something is written by AI and not a person.

LemondrizzleShark · 30/07/2025 12:25

It’s not deceitful, but if people think they are responding to a fake post in order to train a chatbot, you aren’t going to get many helpful responses. And there definitely are chat bots being trained on the responses on here.

DalstonsRhubarb · 30/07/2025 12:26

Wouldn’t bother me if someone used it to help with spelling or whatever, or to check a few factual points.

I don’t see the point of posts where the poster has just entered the question into chat gpt and then presents the response as some sort of final answer. It’s one up from posting LMGTFY. Definitely annoying.

Dinoswearunderpants · 30/07/2025 12:28

Nothing wrong with using tools to make your life easier.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 30/07/2025 12:30

Yes it is always wrong. We shouldn't be outsourcing our thinking.

TaborlinTheGreat · 30/07/2025 12:35

I would never feel the need to do it myself, but it doesn't really bother me if others do tbh. Some people just find it quite hard to express their thoughts in an organised, coherent way. Just putting in a question and letting it create an answer for you is a bit rubbish, I suppose. Getting it to re-create your post to sound more coherent is fine though.

TerrierCollector · 30/07/2025 12:37

The thing is, you need to tell AI what it is you want to say for it to write out an accurate post, and if you can tell it all of the salient points yourself, surely you can just type a post?

The thing with AI posts is, they're usually easy to spot, and lots of people just aren't going to bother to engage with them, no matter how honest a summary of your issues they are.

Glitchymn1 · 30/07/2025 12:38

Perhaps disclose that you’ve used AI ?

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 30/07/2025 14:38

I think it's absolutely fine to do it as long as you don't mind that most people will know (unless you are normally an exceptionally skilled writer....)

cyvguhb · 30/07/2025 14:47

I just posted on another thread about this, for me it's a no, I dont want to read whole screeds of bot written words.

Wintersgirl · 30/07/2025 14:49

No, it's lazy

Darragon · 30/07/2025 14:53

No. AI often makes it longwinded, flowery, and can sometimes add in inaccuracies. I've seen a couple of threads where the OP just assumed the AI had written what they expected and the OPs maybe skimmed the result before pasting into MN, but the AI had added in some incorrect details (hallucinations) near the end which changed the meaning of the question, affected the answers they got and defeated the point of the OPs even posting. Total waste of time for everyone involved.
And don't get me started on the twats who smugly post "I asked Chat GPT for you and it said this..." like they're doing people a favour. Some people really believe it's a magic oracle.

ConsultMe · 30/07/2025 14:55

It’s not wrong but I don’t feel like MN needs AI - surely you should be able to communicate without it. Secondly as a computer science professional I hate seeing obvious AI, please just learn how to use it effectively

22O725 · 30/07/2025 15:06

I don’t know if it’s a typo or not but what you say you used it to write a ‘story post’ this is exactly why i don’t want to read AI.

What do you mean by it?

Nsvdi · 30/07/2025 15:07

As long as it’s what you wanted to write and it’s correct, rather than made up AI bullshit

MurdoMunro · 30/07/2025 15:17

If I wanted to chat with AI I’d go to an AI site. That’s not what I’m here for. A post can be written here in full flowing sentences or in bullet points. Doesn’t matter. As soon as I spot a post that’s been run through AI it doesn’t smell human and I’m off.

HansHolbein · 30/07/2025 15:20

I can spot it a mile off. I don’t like it and I wouldn’t interact with it. Mumsnet is for organic discussion. I would much rather read a post that isn’t ‘perfect’.

Ponderingwindow · 30/07/2025 15:26

I sometimes use AI at work to polish my memos. I write them myself, but then ask for my grammar and clarity to be checked. Then I reread the suggestions and take some of what the AI suggests and reject some of it.

I think it can be a useful tool if used as a tool not a replacement. Basically as if I had a human who could work as an editor to make suggestions, but I don’t happen to have someone available.

I think it is important that our writing is still our own.

DirtyBird · 30/07/2025 16:35

It doesn't really bother me, but I wouldn't do it myself. But I'm old and lazy. 😁

LittleCosette · 30/07/2025 16:37

That was a typo but I can see what you mean about story posts written with AI- way too much detail and like others have said flowery language.

OP posts:
DiscoBob · 30/07/2025 16:39

It's seems a bit bizarre to use a space where you can express very personal opinions, and then instruct a computer on how to write it?

I hate reading AI generated guff. It's just devoid of character and meaning and you can tell. It makes the person seem like their views are fake or they're a troll.

As they often say on here 'use your words' not ones created by the internet.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/07/2025 16:54

When I see an AI post I feel I'm being used to train a chat bot and dont bother.
